RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS | JANUARY 2024

Our deadlines are fast approaching for two major student research events. In addition to the CSU Student Research Competition (below), we’re gearing up for the 45th Central California Research Symposium, set for the Resnick Student Union on Weds., April 3.


The Symposium’s Call for Abstracts is available online, with all applications due by Thurs., Feb. 15. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to present. Late submissions will not be accepted. Applicants are invited to choose between a 12-minute oral presentation or a poster presentation. Each student may submit only one application as a lead author. Note that all faculty mentors will be required to electronically approve applicants prior to acceptance.


Students are also invited to participate in one of two CCRS Abstract Writing Workshops, hosted by the Graduate Student Success Center on Mon., Feb. 5 and Mon., Feb. 12 (both at noon). Both workshops will be offered via Zoom, and students can register online.

CSU STUDENT RESEARCH COMPETITION


Students from all disciplines are invited to participate in the 38th Annual CSU Student Research Competition, hosted by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on April 26-27. Students must submit their application via InfoReady by Thurs., Feb. 22.

JANUARY 2024 AWARD REPORT

  • The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research has awarded nearly $569,000 to the California Water Institute’s Research and Education Division at Fresno State for a project that addresses drought and flooding by planning for sustainable use of surface and groundwater. CWI will partner with Self-Help Enterprises, North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency, Madera County Groundwater Sustainability Agency and Mid-Kaweah Groundwater Sustainability Agency for this project.


  • Sagata Bhawani (Construction Management) received a three-year grant from the Rochester Institute of Technology (via the Lemelson Foundation) for his project, "Toward Institutionalization of Sustainability in Engineering and Related Curricula.”


  • Marianne Jackson (Psychology) received a $100,000 grant from the Sanger Unified School District to provide Behavior Intervention Services.


  • Mabel Franks (Welty Center) received a $60,000 grant from the USDE (via Clovis Unified) to conduct an evaluation for the Clovis Unified School District’s Climate Transformation Program.


  • Matin Pirouz (Computer Science) received second-year funding from the National Science Foundation for her project, "Training Teachers for Inclusive Computer Science Education in K-12: A Study of Effectiveness, Persistence and Retention in Three Noyce Programs."

INTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

The 2024-25 Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity (RSCA) award cycle is now open! Funding is provided by both the Office of the Chancellor and Fresno State’s Provost’s Office.


The awards provide (a) Mini-Grants, (b) Release Time- 3 WTUs (Fall 2024 or Spring 2025); or (c) Summer and Winter Additional Pay. Note that the Provost’s Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities (PRSCA) Award program runs concurrently with the RSCA program, but is contingent upon approved funding.



Faculty are encouraged to use the activities and results from these awards to pursue external funding and to broaden the scope of their research, scholarship and creative activities. Applications close at 11:59 p.m. on Thurs., Feb. 29. Contact your department for more information.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

  • Kalyani Maitra was recently featured on the USDA website, where she discussed her experience as an E. Kika De La Garza (EKDLG) Science Fellow. The program is designed to create opportunities for faculty and staff from Hispanic-serving institutions to collaborate with USDA staff to gain insight into the resources available to their institutions and their students.



  • Jason Whiting (Recreation Administration) and his students partnered with Fresno Unified School District and Adventure Education Solutions to host winter camps for over 600 students this past winter break.


  • Faculty Q&A with Andrea Polegato (MCLL): "I am passionate about connecting students with Italian culture, literature, and language, and fostering an inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity."

ONLINE WORKSHOPS


  • ORCID Workshop for Researchers: Funding organizations, publishers, and research institutions are increasingly requiring ORCID iDs from researchers. This workshop will help you get ahead of the game. Weds., Feb. 7, from 11 a.m.-Noon.

NEW APPOINTMENTS

  • Eric D. Hadden was named as the new Water, Energy and Technology Center Director: "I view the WET Center as one of the best mechanisms we have to provide early-stage entrepreneurs in the ag, energy, and water spaces with the resources and physical space they need to gain a competitive advantage and accelerate their growth in the region that we call home."


  • Varselles L. Cummings has been named as the new director of the Cross Cultural and Gender Center. A Fresno native and graduate of Edison High School, Varselles returns to his roots after two decades away, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a passion for fostering inclusive excellence on college campuses.

IN FOCUS: ARTS AND HUMANITIES

  • Dive into the cutting-edge intersection of art and artificial intelligence at the 2024 Spring Art Education AI Lecture/Workshop series. Get ready to experience a captivating journey into the minds of prominent artificial intelligence artists and scholars. Register online for the free series, which is hosted by Ahran Koo (Art Education) and will run from Feb. 8-March 14 via Zoom.


  • Fully staffed by graduate students, The Normal School magazine provides professional experience in literary publishing for students in the MFA program at Fresno State.


  • The premiere showing of the "Sierra Odyssey" documentary about local photographer and mountaineer Orland Bartholomew is set for Friday, Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m. in the Peters Educational Center. The documentary was produced by Candace Egan through the Fresno State MCJ Multimedia Production Service.

PHISHING EMAIL ALERT

Please be aware that our office (Research and Sponsored Programs) has been targeted in a phishing scam for the past two months where students are receiving emails about "internship openings" and being asked to deposit a check for office supplies. Technology Services is aware of the issue.


If students ask about the emails, please let them know it is part of a phishing scam and forward suspicious messages to the Technology Services – Information Security Team at reportphishing@csufresno.edu. Visit the Information Security page for information on recognizing phishing attempts and other suspicious communications.
