Thank you for joining us at the Loisaida Center's Lower East Side History Month Kick-off event 'Fiesta de Cruz,' a spiritual ceremony that dates all the way back to May 3rd 1787, days after a massive earthquake hit Puerto Rico. Over the centuries, this 'Celebration of the Cross' has continued to express the people's resolve and resiliency, even in the face of natural disasters, to gather together in a common bond of community. What better way for Loisaida to honor LES History Month than to start it off with a traditional "Fiesta de Cruz' that moves from a recital of rosaries--as happened centuries ago, and bursts into music with song-mostly plena, dance, food, and comradery.
However, it doesn't stop here! Below you will find upcoming programs and events, all leading up to the biggest celebration of the year in Loisaida -

An interactive installation

Join us for an archival exhibition on the history of geodesic dome-building in the Lower East Side that
will be on display at the Loisaida Center beginning May 9th
, along with a week-long program of events.
This exhibition is a collaborative project involving Loisaida Inc., La Plaza Cultural, and DIAP (Digital
Intermedia MFA Program at City College). Artist and researcher, Matthew Mottel, will build two geodesic
domes as an interactive art installation for all to enjoy.
Loisaida, Inc. is pleased to host the geodesic dome building opening reception at our Center on
Wednesday, May 9th
, at 6:00 pm, with a performance by the legendary Nuyorican poet, Edwin Torres.

Friday, May 11th, please join us for a presentation of Carlos "Chino" Garcia's oral history conducted by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, screening of Matthew Mottel's short documentary and performances by William Parker & Jackson Krall.

Performances at noon will take place on Saturday, May 12th in conjunction with the Ecological City Pagaent.
Our month-long program of events will also delve further into the history of Loisaida and in celebration of the vitality of our community.

Earth Celebration's Eco-Urban Pilgrimage is May 12th!

Loisaida's Artists-in-Residence, Earth Celebrations, will hold its much-anticipated ecological urban pilgrimage from the gardens to the river, Ecological City Procession on Saturday May 12th (rain date May 13th). The colorful, exciting event features a spectacular six hour procession featuring visual art, giant puppets and costumes with an amazing 20-site performances of dance, music, theater and poetry celebrating sustainability solutions throughout the community gardens, neighborhood and the East River Park Waterfront on the Lower East Side.
Please share and invite friends to come, join, and volunteer, for #ECOLOGICALCITY - this is not a traditional spectator parade where you come to watch, but an interactive transformational experience - become a garden, river, and climate solution spirit--help as a marshal--many roles.

The artwork of community members, primarily made from recyclable materials, will be on display at our successful and beloved Festival Community Parade & Pagaent. A two-week community intensive workshop led by expert street theater artists and puppeteers

The culminating parade will make its
way from
Dry Dock Park
(12th St. and Ave. C) to the Loisaida Festival's Main Stage on May 27th!
2018 Loisaida artist residency recipients Ecological Cities, a cultural and climate action project, will also join our Community Parade & Pageant on the 27th, with an array of puppets and costumes that were
created for the "Ecological City Procession" taking place on May 12, 2018.
