April is springing into action! It's Arts Month!

Dear NMS families and friends,

If the roses at NMS have a message to share, it is that Spring is here and it is buzzing! Today, the LA County Board of Supervisors declared April as Arts Month, and we are excited to sing(play, rehearse, compose, score)about it!

To celebrate our progress and development during the first months of 2022, NMS will be hosting a virtual Spring Recital this Saturday, April 9th. This recital will be livestreamed on Youtube at 6:00 PM(PST), so please join us and share encouragement through the chat!

The Spring Recital will also kick off a much-needed Spring Rest from April 11th- the 16th. There will be no classes during this time, which coincides with LAUSD Spring Break. All classes will resume on Monday, April 18th!


We are bringing the Jazz back to NMS!

On Saturday, April 23rd, NMS is opening the lawn to families and friends for a community concert featuring Steve Johnson's Jazz Legacy Sextet, in partnership with The Music Performance Trust Fund and the American Federation of Musicians, Local 47. Bring a blanket and a picnic and celebrate spring with us! We will also host a vaccine clinic on site, share some updates and a first-look at our summer programs, and celebrate all things Spring! 2019 Mancini Award Honoree and NMS Advisory Board Member, Germaine Franco has been VERY BUSY- and we couldn't be more excited and inspired by her work!

NMS Board Member, Germaine Franco, has had a very busy spring! Not only did she spend 2020-2021 deep in the process of scoring the amazing, beautiful, magical, and award-winning Disney film, Encanto, she also won an Annie Award, SCL Award, and received a bevy of nominations from renowned film and music institutions, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences! Let's Move Together! Yoga with Jeanette is back!

Join us on Saturday mornings and some Wednesday evenings for Zoom Yoga with Jeanette! This is an opportunity for our community to move together, stretch out and give ourselves a gift! Keep an eye on on social media for upcoming dates, and join us on Wednesday, April 6th at 6pm to wind down and relax! This program is free and open to all! Reminders about returning to NMS

At Neighborhood Music School, everyone's safety is our number one priority. We will continue to offer online classes (even after the pandemic) both from the NMS house and the homes of our teaching artists.

Please make sure to wear a mask at all times. This is for your safety, the safety of the families at NMS, the staff, and those who live at home with the students, teaching artists and staff.

Please have your temperature checked when you enter the building.

If you are feeling unwell, please stay home. If someone in your direct household is sick, please stay home.

Returning to the NMS house will include the protocols described in the video at the end of this message.

Policies and procedures for in-person classes and events:

The following policies and procedures were created with guidance from and direction from City, County and State. If you are unable to comply with theses procedures, we encourage you to enjoy online lessons until the pandemic is under control.

  • All students must enter and exit through the back door.

  • Masking is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED when indoors at NMS.

  • Temperatures will be taken(with a digital, forehead thermometer) upon entering the school. If one is running a fever, they will be asked to return home immediately and seek medical advice.

  • Handwashing and sanitizing after using the restroom, and before touching an instrument, will be mandatory.

  • Maintaining a social distance of 6 feet or more with all staff, teaching artists and non-familial community is mandatory.

Recordatorios sobre el regreso a NMS

Ahora que hemos trasladado algunas clases a NMS, la tasa de infección por covid sigue creciendo en el condado de Los Ángeles y la seguridad de todos es nuestra prioridad número uno. Las siguientes políticas y procedimientos se crearon con orientación y dirección de la ciudad, el condado y el estado. Si no puede cumplir con estos procedimientos, le recomendamos que disfrute de las lecciones en línea hasta que la pandemia esté bajo control.

  • Todos los estudiantes deben entrar y salir por la puerta de atrás.

  • El enmascaramiento es ALTAMENTE RECOMENDADO cuando se está en interiores en NMS.

  • Las temperaturas se tomarán (con un termómetro digital para la frente) al ingresar a la escuela. Si uno tiene fiebre, se les pedirá que regresen a casa inmediatamente y busquen consejo médico.

  • Será obligatorio lavarse las manos y desinfectarse después de usar el baño, y antes de tocar un instrumento.

  • Es obligatorio mantener una distancia social de 6 pies o más con todo el personal, los artistas docentes y la comunidad no familiar. Los invitados y los padres ya no pueden observar las clases desde el interior del aula.
