FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PERMANENT CLOSURE OF

 THE BELLE CHASSE TUNNEL

BELLE CHASSE, LA. - The Belle Chasse Bridge and Tunnel Replacement Project announces the permanent closure of the Belle Chasse Tunnel effective today, Wednesday, 12/20/23. The closure is now in place.

Vehicles traveling southbound on LA-23 will now utilize the constructed portion of the new Belle Chasse Bridge. The existing Belle Chasse Bridge will be utilized when traveling northbound on LA-23 until the final completion of the new Belle Chasse Bridge.

In addition, there will be a temporary detour of the right southbound turn from Engineers Road onto LA-23. Between Thursday, December 21st, 2023, and Monday, January 29th, 2024, motorists wishing to turn right from Engineers Rd. onto LA-23 will need to turn left from Engineers Rd onto LA-23 and use the Burmaster St. U-turn to then travel southbound on LA-23.

Tolling does not begin on the new Belle Chasse Bridge until its final completion, slated for Spring 2024. Public information regarding tolling for the new Belle Chasse Bridge will be disseminated starting January 2024.
