Interview Questions

If you could live as an animal, what would it be and why?
It would be a bear – a brown bear. So I could eat berries and fruit, and I think the people watching would be great. And maybe climbing trees to get a bird’s eye view…and being quiet.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
It would be my mother’s father – so my grandpa. I never met my grandpa. I love my mother and I think meeting someone from my family would be meaningful more than a star or a politician. And the stories my mom has told me about him make me love him. So what I know about my grandpa, that I never met, is that he would send my mom off on errands to look for a “star hook” and “striped paint.” So I think that if you can get a young person to go off and look for things that don’t exist, you have got to have a good sense of humor, right? He would also say to my mom when she was hungry, “How about a pine float?” He would offer her water with a toothpick! He had a great sense of humor and I know he was very loving.

If you could have one super-power, what would it be and why?
This was the hardest question! I think I got it. I would be a human lie-detector. I would be so well-regarded that I would be called in to tell the difference between truth and fiction. If I was a human lie detector and someone was lying, I would be able to say, “That’s not true,” and people would know I was correct. So I would always find the truth.

If you could choose another job besides the field of education, what would it be and why?
I would choose something in fisheries management. That’s because my favorite class in high school was Marine Biology and my favorite class in college was fisheries. I’m not sure why I didn’t pursue more in fisheries sciences, but I didn’t. I think it wasn’t what I was supposed to do.

What is the best thing you ever learned from a student?
The favorite thing I learned from a student is a term: Scribble Words. That term was used when the student was making up words. I though that was a super clever term. I think in general students have their eyes wide open and their ears wide open and they’re open to new ideas and thoughts more than adults are. So really, it’s not just one thing, it’s everything. So if you can look and see the world through students’ eyes, I think we’re better off. I think you all have handled the pandemic better that most adults.
