Mid-America Prevention Training Transfer Center (PTTC) recently featured AC4C on their Podcast.  Check it out and their website for training opportunities and other resources to support prevention here in Iowa.
AC4C hosted two events on Alcohol in the past month!

AC4C hosted two press conferences in the past month, the first was March 23 and the second April 6. The SAMHSA Communities Talk program provided the inspiration to get the first conference planned during our March Work Retreat. The Alcohol Action Team whipped up the plans with help from MCTC. The Action Team wanted to raise awareness about the increases in alcohol use and sales, alcohol-related liver disease, and access to alcohol, all of which have grown worse during the pandemic. The link to the first news conference story from KCRG is HERE.

After the success of the first press conference, the Policy Workgroup decided to plan another Zoom event focusing on Underage Drinking in Iowa during April, which is Alcohol Awareness month and talk about what can be done to not lose the progress made over the past 15 years. The middle school drinking rates rose according to the last Iowa Youth Survey. There is great concern that the increase in alcohol availability will translate into increases in use for all age groups.  The link to the recording of the second press conference is HERE.

Thanks to Peter Komendowski from the Partnership for a Healthy Iowa for leading both events, as well as Dr. Paul Gilbert for sharing his knowledge at both press conferences.  Thanks also to Mackenzie, our high school student, Aurion Redding, our college student, Senator Claire Celsi, Representative Sandy Salmon, and Maggie Ballard all for participating. AC4C will be continuing this conversation and making good use of the Communities Talk stipend to do so.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

From the National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI):
"Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, NAMI joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families.

For 2021's Mental Health Awareness Month NAMI will continue to amplify the message of "You Are Not Alone." We will use this time to focus on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing mental health and acknowledging that it's okay to not be okay through NAMI's blog, personal stories, videos, digital toolkits, social media engagements and national events." Click HERE to learn more about NAMI and Mental Health Awareness Month.

Your Life Iowa
"If you or a loved one are facing a problem with alcohol, drugs, gambling, mental health or suicidal thoughts, you're not alone. That is why the Iowa Department of Public Health has created YourLifeIowa.org so Iowans can chat live, text, or call and get reliable information and treatment options, and find nearby help."
