CareCloud: Advice from SCRC's Team of Experts

How can we best support the caregivers in our lives? What is the best way to show appreciation?

Being a caregiver is challenging. Some challenges are easily managed, while others take more time, energy, and resources to navigate. Although caregivers find that responsibilities increase along their journey, asking for help poses a bigger challenge. That’s why I find that the best way to offer support to a caregiver is directly asking questions like:

  • “How can I help you?”
  • “Can I bring you a meal?”
  • “Can I get you anything from the store?”

Caregiver burnout is an overwhelming reality for many. Validation through the act of expressing support to a caregiver for all that they do is crucial. Showing appreciation can be as simple as saying “I am thankful for all that you do.” Treating them to a meal, offering them a break or helping with tasks can do wonders for those who care for others.

For more on how to show appreciation to a caregiver in your lives, visit Southern Caregiver Resource Center’s video series Caring for the Caregiver: Self-Care Activities for Dementia Caregivers, which teaches practical, hands-on methods for reducing the stress associated with caregiving, with a focus on mental wellbeing.
