Dear School of Medicine Community,

We had a wonderful Diversity Dinner and Celebration in February with over 400 guests at the new M&T Bank Exchange in the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center. Secretary of Health, Laura Herrera Scott, MD, and President & CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee, Mark Anthony Thomas, gave thought-provoking and inspiring talks about their visions for a better Baltimore through access to health care, bridging gaps, and providing resources through a diverse and inclusive lens. Wonder Drake, MD and Sandra Quezada, MD served as our evening’s gracious emcees. Several prospective students joined us, and I know from my conversations with them that many were inspired by and enthusiastic to hear about how our values and priorities aligned with their own.

I want to congratulate Laundette Jones, PhD, MPH, who received the Dean’s Alumni Award for Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Jones’ efforts in providing encouraging and skilled mentorship of young scientists who are threatened by marginalization are commendable. She prioritizes the community around her, and I am extremely grateful to have a champion like her advocating for health equity and diversity and inclusion within our field. I also want to congratulate Milagritos Tapia, MD, who received the Dean’s Faculty Award for Diversity and Inclusion at our celebration. Dr. Tapia’s work to enhance diversity and equity in her academic and scientific endeavors, as well as her extra efforts outside of her work environment are inspiring. Congratulations to both Dr. Jones and Dr. Tapia!

We raised almost $100,000 and still counting from this event! These funds will directly support our School’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, including the Dean Emeritus Donald E. Wilson Endowed Scholarship Fund. We are still receiving and accepting support to these funds, so if you feel so moved, please consider giving here. I want to thank everyone who participated for putting their best foot forward for a memorable evening, and I want to encourage you not to miss this event next year!

I am welcoming a few new members to our Board of Visitors, including Bert O’Malley, MD, President and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center, as ex-officio; Marcus Wang, Esq., Maryland Health Care Commissioner; and Troy Lemaile-Stovall, CEO of TEDCO. I am enthusiastic about including their unique insights in our value-driven mission.

As part of our mission is clinical, I’m excited to share some updates from our University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. (FPI) front. We have expanded our Waterloo Ambulatory Surgery Center to include spine cases, led by Graeme Woodworth, MD and Frank Henn, MD. FPI also welcomed Colin Semper, MBA, as the new Chief Strategic Operations and Business Development Officer. Colin will work with our School and our University of Maryland Medical Center/University of Maryland Medical System partners to advance our clinical strategic operations and business development initiatives.

On the education front, we are nearing the end of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) reaccreditation process that began in 2020. We have revised the School’s bylaws, updated the annual faculty review process, streamlined the appointment process for volunteer faculty, developed a new five-year strategic plan that we will launch this month, and submitted a self-study in January. We will host the LCME for their visit April 14-17 and look forward to full reaccreditation soon.

Thanks for everyone’s continued engagement. I’m looking forward to seeing more of you around campus as the weather warms up!

With enthusiasm and commitment,

Mark T. Gladwin, MD (He/him/his)
