-------Led by the mercy of God we journey together this season of Lent.
The School of St. Mary “Virtual GALA” – Love Saint Mary’s is being held Friday, February 19th from 6:30 – 8:00 PM. The Gala committee has worked many hours to make this GALA a success. You can follow the activity and or make a donation by clicking on the website; lovestmary.com. Let’s pray for all the benefactors of the School of St. Mary that help support Catholic education in our parish.
---------During Lent we will be using a new Penitential Rite at all of the Masses. For those of you not familiar with the responses, I am sharing it with you in this week’s article. It is very easy to remember.
Penitential Rite – Church of St. Mary – Lent 2021
Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
People: For we have sinned against you.
Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy.
People: And grant us your salvation.
Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
People: Amen.
---------In a concerted way, in the season of Lent we join with all Christians who live under the sign of the cross. We begin our communal worship, our devotion, the Mass by marking our bodies with this sign of our salvation. At Mass the priest greets us: “The Lord be with you”. In this greeting (or similar greetings) we are addressed as one family in Christ. We remember Christ’s promise that where two or three are gathered in his name, he is truly present. Recognizing that none of us come to the altar without having been marred by sin in our lives, we take a moment to open our hearts to God’s mercy so that despite our unworthiness he may grant us a place at his table. There are three different forms of the Penitential Act. Sometimes, especially during the Easter Season, a rite of blessing and sprinkling of water may take the place of the Penitential Act as a reminder of our Baptism.
---------At Masses where a special rite precedes the Mass, for instance at a wedding or one of the rituals of the catechumenate, the Penitential Act is omitted and we move immediately to the Gloria or Opening Prayer. The Mass on Ash Wednesday begins with the greeting of the priest and then immediately leads to the Opening Prayer, on the day that ashes are received by the faithful as a sign of our repentance, there is no penitential rite as part of the Mass.
This first Sunday of Lent, we read from the book of Genesis. God added: “This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings.”

---------In every land that God has created, in every country on Planet Earth, a sign of God’s promise and commitment is seen. What may we use this Lent to remind ourselves of the faithfulness of God, through every act of prayer, fasting and almsgiving we choose to participate in?
---------This year if you would like, you can purchase homemade soup loving made by the local “Soup Fairy” aka from Lia Landis soup specialist and longtime parishioner. A 1/2 Gallon of soup (in 2 separate quart containers) is available for $20.00. The soup is delivered to people in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. Each week there will be a different soup offered for purchase. The current schedule is as follows: Friday, February 26, 2021 - Tuscan Bean and Kale, Friday, March 5, 2021 - Minestrone w/ Cheese Stuffed Tortellini and on Friday, March 12, 2021 - Tuscan Bean and Kale. You could order enough for you and your family – maybe even share some with social distancing with a neighbor. You could enjoy the simple dinner during Lent and then stream our praying of the stations and or join us at St. Mary’s at 7:00 PM on Friday evenings.
The deadline to order soup for the following Friday is by Tuesday at 12:00 Noon of that week. Once you place an order through my Administrative Assistant at the Parish Office (lardell@churchofstmary.org), you will receive a confirmation email with details regarding payment.
We may not be able to come together in the school cafeteria this year at the hospitality of the Knights of Columbus but we can enjoy a simple meal of soup united in “spirit” with one another on Fridays of Lent. You are invited to attend at 7:00 PM or stream the Stations of the Cross through the Church of St. Mary website.
---------Lent Rice Bowl packets are available for your prayer, reflection and almsgiving. Included with the packets are prayers that I will use in my article for the season of Lent.
God of Mercy, You call us to recognize you in our sisters and brothers, and to care for those most in need – for whatever you do for the least of these you do for me. This Lent, ignite your love in us so that through our prayers, fasting and almsgiving we may support all who experience hunger in body, heat and spirit. AMEN.
May the mercy of God direct our lives these Lenten days.

RCIA: The Rite of Sending and The Rite of Election
|
|
Sunday, February 21 at the 10 o’clock Mass those adults in the RCIA program who are preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation on Holy Saturday will be dismissed at the end of the Liturgy of the Word, after the homily. The Catechumen and Candidates depart from the Mass with the RCIA Team to discuss the Mass readings and to experience more fully the impact of the Scripture in their lives. This will continue each Sunday until Easter when, at the Easter Vigil they will join us at the table of the Eucharist for the first time.
Across the entire world, Catholic bishops on this first Sunday of Lent welcome these RCIA participants in what is known as the “Rite of Election” and the “Call to Continuing Conversion”.
During the 10 o’clock Mass, the “Rite of Sending” will take place for Catechumen Melissa Delia. Later in the afternoon Melissa along with her godparent, Anne Doppenburg and Fr. Nacius will attend and celebrate the “Rite of Election” at Holy Name Cathedral. This Rite marks a key moment for the final period of her preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
Also, at the 10 o’clock Mass the RCIA “Rite of the Call to Continuing Conversion” will be celebrated with our candidates: Julie Booma, Michael Dolan, Mary Kate McComish, Dee Shreve, John Sternberg and their sponsors. We, the parishioners of St. Mary’s, as a Church community support them during the season of Lent, a period of continued formation and intense spiritual preparation to be fully initiated at the Easter Vigil.
We ask for the prayers and support from our parish community during this Lenten season for our Catechumen and Candidates as they enter into their time of purification and enlightenment.

Please Make Your Gift
to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal
Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world
Our parish is conducting our campaign for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.
The Annual Catholic Appeal theme, “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world,” was selected because as disciples of Jesus, we follow the Master who both gives us hope and sends us to bring His hope to our world that needs it so much.
Each pledge makes a difference! All parishes communities participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our parishes, schools and ministries to deliver needed services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.
-
Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
-
Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
-
Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
-
Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
-
Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
-
Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
-
Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
-
100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
-
Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
-
Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
-
Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
-
Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
-
Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
-
SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.

February 21, 2021: Gospel Reflection for First Sunday of Lent
|
|
We are at the beginning of our Lenten journey. The 1st Sunday of Lent we always hear about Jesus being tempted in the desert and the 2nd Sunday of Lent is always the Transfiguration. Since this liturgical year is cycle B (of A, B & C) we hear mainly from the gospel of Mark. Since Mark was historically written first, this also means it is the most concise without a lot of details. That does not mean however that his writing is without depth.
Jesus has just been baptized and upon coming up from the river Jordan the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descends upon Jesus and Jesus hears God say that Jesus is his beloved son. That is a lot to contemplate. Heaven has opened up to creation, never to be closed again. Jesus needs time in solitude to reflect upon what it means to be the beloved of God, so he goes into the desert.
Jesus didn’t just think, “Hey, there is a desert not too far away maybe it would be good to go there.” No, in scripture, deserts are places of purification and contemplation. We are also told that it was the Spirit that drove Jesus to the desert. If the Spirit is sending Jesus to the desert clearly he will be able to handle what happens therein. Jesus will remain there for 40 days, reminiscent of the 40 years the Israelites wandered the desert. The difference is that the Israelites all too often did not remain true to the covenant and Jesus does. Jesus is setting the example for all on how to live a Spirit filled life.
After 40 days of fasting and prayer Jesus is tempted by the Adversary, Satan, It’s the Adversary’s role to try to get humanity to focus on themselves and what they may have to move away from in order to truly live as the beloved of God. For example, “I want to focus on obtaining wealth and status for myself”, “If I just had ‘X, Y, Z’ then I will start advocating for others”. The Adversary wants us to focus only on ourselves rather than working towards equity for all. Equality for all takes more time and does indeed mandate sacrifices of each of us. Jesus is prepared to put in the time, effort and compassion needed to bring about this new reality; are we?
Once Jesus’ time in the desert is over he learns that John the Baptist has been handed over to Herod. This ends John’s time as a prophet and rushes in the start of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus’ message is simple; the long awaited time to bring about the fulfillment of scripture is now. How do we prepare ourselves? We must repent from anything that keeps us from having God at the center of our lives. It may be distractions and/or our priorities that we need to examine from a new perspective. What does it mean to believe in the gospel? What changes can we make in our lives to be more aligned with God’s desires for us and all of creation? What would it look like to live with true compassion for all, not just our friends, family or those who can give us an advantage in life? We have 40 days to start this incredible life long journey of transformation.

“After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God . . .” MARK 1:14
Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of steward-ship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us.
