“Cultivating Kindness, Relationships, and Growth for all.”
News You Can Use: March 4, 2022

Dear CCGS Families,
This week our students learned about different book genres and dove into a variety of reading activities for Read Across America Week. Students and staff enjoyed dressing up for each of the themed days and they looked spectacular in their sunglasses, bright colors, and dressy clothes for picture day. This week I also enjoyed some time in P.E playing fitness kickball and recess outside with our second grade students. The highlight of my week was playing board games with a few friends and making Good News Phone Calls home to families!

The district is looking for feedback on the student/parent handbook. The handbook can be found at this link. If you have feedback please email Tracy at [email protected].

Each week I offer a way for you to share a celebration or ask questions on this survey. If you would like a specific reply, please add your name so I can get back to you. If you comment about a specific teacher- I send this directly to them and I know it really brightens their day! This week I was able to send some emails to three teachers!

Here is some feedback we received this last week:
"I stopped by the book fair with my daughter and I was super impressed with how each staff member greeted her by name. One particular staff member even went out of her way to tell me about how much she appreciates my daughter as a student. This interaction made my daughter feel so special and it was nice to have that interaction with staff. Thank you for the hard work you put into making the book fair a fun and well-run event!

Separately, I would also like to thank the staff that stands out in the cold or crazy weather each day through the car line. I’ve never seen one of them NOT smiling or complaining about being out there. You guys are amazing!"

  • MAP Reports Coming Home: The MAP reports are coming home today!
  • Third Grade Student IAR Testing Begins: This letter went home from through email from the third grade teachers today, but in case you missed it, please click here.
  • Please send an extra outfit for your child: We are still going outside for recess and go out when it is 15 degrees and above. Please ensure your child still brings boots and gloves to school each day until the weather gets warmer.
  • Car Rider and Walker Reminders: Please have your red or green name showing for pick up time whether a walker or a car rider. K-3 parents, please make a right turn only into the rear lot at the end of the day. Please do not block the driveways on Mill and Orange Street so those families can get out of their driveways. Thank you for always having your signs ready!
  • Lost and Found: Is your child missing an item? Have them check the lost and found in the main hallway! We will be donating items to the local fod pantry prior to spring break.
  • Lunch: Students have 3 lunch choices every day. The menu is sent home with every student and is also on the Y115 app. You can also click here to find that!
  • Devices: Please send your child's charger to school each day. It is also the responsibility of the student to charge each night. We have several students coming without charged devices and no way to charge.

Have a great weekend!

5Essentials Parent Survey Reminder
Thank you to those of you who have already completed the survey! As a parent, you now have an opportunity to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school called the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. The 10 minute survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.

The Parent Survey Supplement is now open and will close on March 11, 2022. We need at least 20% of our D115 parents to participate so please complete the survey today!

To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact Brent Edwards at [email protected]. Thank you so much for your participation and helping to provide key insights for improvement at your child’s school. Please find more information at Yorkville 5Essentials Parent Survey
Our winter MAP data is in and our students have grown significantly in math since the Fall. We grew in our reading percentage too, but we did not meet our winter goal. Due to that, we are putting in extra incentives for reading in the coming weeks. Please encourage your child to read, complete his or her Lexia units each week, and complete RAZ or IXL lessons. If we are all working on our school goals together, we will see even more success in the Spring!
New Fox Shop items have been ordered and should be in next week. Let your learner know to listen to the morning announcements so they know when the new items arrive!
This student has been following the four CCGS Cornerstones this week! She will be leading the school in the pledge next week.
Ms. Seeman's class has been working as a team and showing kindness to others. They were our golden platter winners this week and will get a recess with Mrs. Hamm or Mrs. Anderson next week.
Kindergarten: Mrs. Pynenberg
Spotlight Week: February 28th- March 4th

We are having so much fun in Kindergarten! This week was filled with many hands-on, collaborative learning experiences. Students interviewed each other by asking and answering questions about themselves. They were able to learn more about their peers and see how they are alike and different from one another. They asked their interview questions with a clear voice and used brave spelling to write down their responses. They all did a wonderful job with their speaking and listening skills!
We love our choice bin exploration time. All the bins have different materials inside. Students are able to think creatively and make something new! I am always so impressed with their divergent thinking and what they come up with. This week we had some bears playing baseball, a pinball game, and a castle with a drawbridge. Ask your child about some of the things they have created during choice time!
We are excited that March is here and enjoy literacy activities with games and movement. Students love our read and write the room time. Students went on a hunt to find the hidden word cards around our classroom. They wrote and read each word they found. Some of the hidden words were shamrock, wind, rainbow, and gold.
Our 3rd quarter math focus is number sense to 20. We have been practicing counting and making number quantities. Teen numbers can be tricky so we use hands-on counters or manipulatives to help our brains see and touch these amounts. We also use ten frames to help organize our counters and compare numbers to determine greater and less.

Building Reading Stamina
By: Readingrockets.org
“Having stamina for something means being able to stick with something for periods of time. This stamina, or endurance, builds strength. Stamina can apply to lots of different areas, such as exercise or painting. It can also apply to reading“

Teachers often think about a student's reading stamina. Reading stamina is a child's ability to focus and read independently for long-ish periods of time without being distracted or without distracting others. Reading stamina is something that parents can help students develop. Here's how:
Vary the way the reading is done. Parents can think about this in terms of having their child "read to himself, read to someone, and listen to reading." Some combination of the three should make up the reading time, especially for new or struggling readers.

Choose "just right" books. If your child is at a stage of being able to read alone, help him choose books that he is able to read independently. This means he should be able to decode almost every word in the book correctly. In this situation, avoid using books that are too difficult to read alone. If your child will be reading with you, choose books that are lively and engaging.

Set reasonable goals. Most toddlers and preschoolers find it difficult to sit for long periods of time, even with the most engaging book! When starting out, limit book time to just a few minutes and work up from there. For elementary aged readers, consider starting with 10-15 minutes of reading time, and work up from there. Add a few minutes to your reading time every week or so.
Celebrate progress. Without getting too caught up on the number of minutes spent reading, celebrate the time that is spent reading. Share your favorite parts of books read, plan the next visit to the library, and share progress with other family members.

Spending longer periods of time reading means fewer interruptions and more time reading what you love. As your child moves into higher grades, having reading stamina will help your child navigate the longer texts and assignments. Using these tips can help develop more stamina in your reader.
