Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine
This year, we graduated a class of medical students in which more than one-third identified from groups that are historically underrepresented in medicine, and 27% were the first in their families to earn a college diploma. We are proud to welcome a new medical student class in which 52% identify with a group that has been historically underrepresented in medicine.
As we welcome learners from diverse backgrounds, how might we help them feel a sense of belonging immediately? One quick tip when meeting students for the first time, is starting with new types of ice breakers that invite the sharing of bits of background/identities.

For example, "Hi, my name is ______. My pronouns are ______. One thing you wouldn't know just by looking at me is _________. It's important for me to tell you this because ______."

Students and residents can give as much or little information in that one sentence as they want to, and it serves as an opener for later dialogue.

Onboarding Committee
"Natalia, Kirsten, and Emily worked countless hours over the past few months to ensure we had the BEST Onboarding Intensive (OI) for our incoming faculty and fellows – total beast mode! Thank you for all your efforts in making all three OI the best experience for our new hires."

- Rosemary Yau
Katharine Yang
"Shout-out to Katharine, who was falcon covering and AHF – volunteered to admit and take care of a critically ill CCU patient who had transferred from an OSH with cardiogenic shock. She is such a team player! Katharine had a particularly busy and challenging shift, managing a post-ablation patient who had hemorrhagic shock from an RP bleed, while also handling multiple new admissions. I was impressed with her communication, ability to triage everything on her plate that night, and most of all her great attitude through it all!"

- Megan McLaughlin
Ari Hoffman
"Ari went above and beyond during his recent rotation at Mt. Zion. He was literally sprinting to the pharmacy across the street to get some medications before a patient discharged home. In two days, he's discharged two people (which is hard to do around here)."

- Elizabeth Patmont (MZ Nurse)
Julie Wu
"Shoutout for Dr. Julie Wu for working incredibly hard to organize the discharge of a long-term patient with complex needs. She worked collaboratively with the patient's team inside the hospital and out, and developed a plan and always putting the patient first. She was open to others’ opinions, able to emotionally support the patient, and spent many hours coordinating the care. Julie followed up with each member of the team often and ensured that everyone was updated with new information. We have Julie to thank for this incredibly smooth transition and collaborative environment. This couldn't have happened without her."

- Maia Asiano
Bassem Ghali
"I want to give a shoutout to Bassem for helping out with very last minute night shifts at Mission Bay. Thank you so much Bassem!"

- Christine Lam
Rosemary Yau
"Rosemary, thank you for all your hard work organizing the search committee tasks, meetings, and information!"
