As we welcome learners from diverse backgrounds, how might we help them feel a sense of belonging immediately? One quick tip when meeting students for the first time, is starting with new types of ice breakers that invite the sharing of bits of background/identities.
For example, "Hi, my name is ______. My pronouns are ______. One thing you wouldn't know just by looking at me is _________. It's important for me to tell you this because ______."
Students and residents can give as much or little information in that one sentence as they want to, and it serves as an opener for later dialogue.
