Hello Luther ‘67 Classmate!

Greetings at long last! In the two years since the last Class Agent letter, we’ve all been challenged in ways we could not have imagined, and we have all been changed in one way or another. Some of us have experienced the virus firsthand with ourselves or close family becoming ill, and some of us have lost loved ones and others close to us to the virus.

I’m sure many of you found yourself in a situation similar to ours. When schools in Iowa were closed for an extended time, my daughter wanted her children keep a school-like schedule each weekday morning and have the afternoons for “recess and PE.” The kids’ teachers were very helpful in providing materials and advice to anyone who asked. My daughter and husband had to work remotely from home, so three very active children underfoot would likely have been disaster. She enlisted our help to look after the kids and take them on field trips to safe local destinations. They live only three doors up the street, so logistics were not an issue. Jackie and I were sheltering in place anyway and our plans for travel had been quashed, so it was not an imposition for us, and the extra time with our grandchildren was welcome.

If any positives can be said to come from the pandemic, one might be that families have been drawn closer through technology. My father was locked down in an assisted living facility for many months, and limited window visits were as close as we could get. Unlike many of his age, he was tech savvy and able to have a social life online, and especially enjoyed a weekly family Zoom gathering that we continue to hold. He got to enjoy his grands and greats, if remotely, until he passed away from natural causes last May, one day short of his 96th birthday.

Our alma mater, too, has seen changes and challenges unimaginable just a couple of years ago. I recall seeing a news piece showing choirs rehearsing in the empty swimming pool adjacent to campus where the walls would contain the sound while the singers socially distanced in an open space. Challenges bring about creative solutions and make us stronger!

I hope you will be able to come to Luther during Homecoming 2022 when our Class of ‘67 will be honored at a luncheon on Saturday, October 8, marking the milestone of 55 years as Luther alumni. Information will be forthcoming. See you there!

Even after 55 years, Luther continues to shape and guide us. Please do what you can to support Luther College as it faces further challenges. One convenient way is to donate on Luther Giving Day on Thursday, March 10. Check out luther.edu/giving-day/ for more information.

If you are reviewing your estate planning, please consider remembering Luther College in your will or trust if you have not done so already. Contact Kelly Sorenson at 800-225-8664 or email kelly.sorenson@luther.edu to discuss providing support for Luther with a planned gift.

Best wishes, and Go Norse!
