Indiana’s District Showcase Award
Nominations due by July 29
The District Showcase Award is designed to highlight the success of local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) in the Hoosier state. The award focus allows Districts the opportunity to share new project ideas or better ways to design and implement existing conservation projects, etc. The award is sponsored by the Indiana Conservation Partnership.
Applications for the 2022 Indiana District Showcase Award are now open!

IDEM Storm Water Permitting Webinar for SWCDs

We understand that with recent permitting changes in storm water at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), there have been many questions from districts. IASWCD is collaborating with IDEM Storm Water staff to hold an IDEM Storm Water Permitting Webinar for SWCDs. This webinar will be recorded. However, if you can make it, IDEM staff will be on hand to answer questions during and after the presentation. We hope you are able to join us for this learning opportunity.

SWCD Resolution Submission
Resolutions to be considered at the 2023 IASWCD Annual Business Meeting in Indianapolis at the Westin on January 10, 2023 must be submitted by emailing the form to Joe Schmees, or through the online form. Deadline: end of business on September 16, 2022. Resolutions will be reviewed by the IASWCD committee and returned in final version to all SWCDs by November 1, for consideration at local board meetings prior to the Annual Business Meeting. A summary of the resolution process can be found at iaswcd.org. If you have any questions, please reach out to Joe or any of the IASWCD board members.

Lt. Governor Crouch and ISDA seek distinguished agricultural leader nominations
INDIANAPOLIS (June 1, 2022) — Nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 AgriVision Award, the highest agricultural honor presented by the state. This award, now in its 16th year, was established by the Lt. Governor and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture to recognize Indiana’s agricultural leaders who are ensuring Indiana is, and remains, a global center for food and agricultural innovation and commercialization. Indiana farmers grow food and fiber for the entire world, but they can’t do the work themselves. After the seeds are planted and nutrients are applied, it is time for pollinators in all shapes and sizes to play their role in ensuring the plants grow and produce high yields. Corn self-pollinates, but other crops such as soybeans, vegetables, orchard fruit and melons either can be helped by pollinators or are completely dependent upon them.

June 6, 2022 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announces significant investments to support urban agriculture, including $43.1 million for grants and cooperative agreements as well as six new urban county committees to help deliver key USDA programs to urban producers. These actions support USDA’s efforts to strengthen the food supply chain and transform the food system to be fairer, more competitive, and more resilient.

June 13, 2022 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is accepting proposals for the Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership to improve forest health on public and private lands. USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the US Forest Service (USFS) staff will work closely with all interested partners to maximize collaboration and effectiveness of the proposed projects and submit proposals by Aug. 5.

USDA Announces Assistance for On-Farm Food Safety Expenses for Specialty Crop Growers
New Program Part of Broader Effort to Transform Food System, Create Jobs
HOLLIS, NEW HAMPSHIRE, JUNE 17, 2022— Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to provide up to $200 million in assistance for specialty crop producers who incur eligible on-farm food safety program expenses to obtain or renew a food safety certification in calendar years 2022 or 2023. USDA’s new Food Safety Certification for Specialty Crops (FSCSC) program will help to offset costs for specialty crop producers . . .

2022 Pesticide Clean Sweep Project
The 2022 Pesticide Clean Sweep Project sponsored by the Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) offers statewide collection sites in August in Wabash, Bartholomew, Daviess, Randolph, Porter and Hendricks counties in August. This is a great way for farmers, public and private schools, ag dealers, nurseries, golf courses, cities, towns, municipalities, county units of government and others to dispose of suspended, canceled, banned, unusable, opened, unopened or just unwanted pesticides (weed killers, insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides, miticides, etc.) for free (up to 250 pounds per participant). Those wanting to participate are required to complete and submit a planning form by mail, e-mail or fax by August 5, 2022 to Nathan Davis.
