Research Meets Reality at the Vet Rehab Summit on November 13th!
Join the Facebook Pop-up Group from October 13-November 13
In human medicine, and specifically in the field of physiotherapy, there is a strong focus on evidence-based practice and research-led clinical reasoning. In the veterinary field, we strive for the same evidence-based focus, but we are often sidelined by reality. This year’s Vet Rehab Summit will pitch research and reality against one another as we discuss multiple topics essential to our field in dual webinars.
CE for the Vet Rehab Summit will be split into 2 sections this year:
- A free 30-day Facebook Pop-up group, where we will host lectures and discussions over the course of 1 month (running from October 13 to November 13)
- The main event: Dual Webinars each with a canine and equine lecturer discussing one topic, on November 13.
Facebook Pop-up group discussions include: A multidisciplinary team approach with Gillian Tabor and Yogi Sharp; Clinical Research with Kirsten Häusler, Nicole Rombach, and Dr. David Marlin; and Unity in Veterinary Rehabilitation with Amie Hesbach and May Romer.
CPD lectures will include: Setting up your clinic for enhanced data collection with Nicole Rombach; If you could choose one modality with Laurie McCauley; and Research in Rehabilitation with Chris Zink.
For the Vet Rehab Summit, be sure to join us LIVE on November 13 – recordings will not be available!
Topics include: Isolated vs Integrated Exercise with Lowri Davies and Sheila Schils; Research vs Reality with Leilani Alvarez and Kevin Haussler; Canine vs Equine Hydrotherapy with Melissa King and David Levine; and Pain vs Modalities with Sharon Classen and Laurie McCauley.

K9 Strong Rehabilitation & Conditioning
K9 Strong opened its doors in 2018 as an addition to an established equine practice. That means we are fortunate to be situated on 9 acres in the country and the dogs don’t even realize they are at a veterinary practice. Both ends of the building can be opened and we do a good amount of our therapies out of doors. We have "camp" for our weight loss dogs where they are dropped off in the morning, have several play/exercise sessions in a field, get to watch the activity of the large animals from a paddock, and go home in the afternoon where they sleep for the rest of the day!
K9 Strong offers aquatic therapy (pool and underwater treadmill), land treadmills, e-stim, therapeutic ultrasound, laser, vibration platforms, Digatherm thermal imaging, Gait4Dogs gait analyzer, and of course therapeutic exercise. We are excited to have brought regenerative medicine to the area. We process stem cells and PRP and perform the injections for local practices. Intra-articular medication is underutilized in small animal practice when compared to the equine patient, and we are happy to add that into a patient’s pain management strategy. We are dedicated to expanding the use of veterinary rehabilitation and giving educational talks and presentations as often as possible so that we can reach the dogs who need us.

The most rewarding jobs are those which significantly help to improve pets and people’s lives, or contribute to a bigger cause. That is what we do as veterinary technicians. Physical rehabilitation is at the top of the list for receiving a huge sense of satisfaction and allows us to make a real difference in the world.

- How old are they and what conditions do they have?
- In what way are you changed because of them?
- What is the best part of the session for you and your patient?
To enter, email your answers to these questions with a picture of this special patient to technician@rehabvets.org. This contest is open to all veterinary technicians who are members of AARV.
The deadline is October 17th during National Vet Tech Week.

TECHNICIAN CORNER
Happy National Veterinary Technician Week!
|
|
by Sandy Gregory, M. Ed, RVT, VTS (Physical Rehabilitation), CCRA
AARV Technician Liaison
It has been 28 years that we, as veterinary technicians, have been honored during the third week of October. We have taken the oath to invest in the profession by providing excellent care and service for animals, by alleviating animal suffering and promoting public health. And we do!!
I look back on my incredible journey of 20 years in this field (so far). The technological advancement, the new careers, animals saved, animals that are gone, scars endured, laughs and tears have all made me who I am today. My body tells me it has been hard, my heart has been enriched, and my brain keeps growing. With every animal that I meet, my life is enriched, driving me to do more.
I hope each one of you are rewarded in all the ways you should be. We will never get that monetary amount but we will be enriched in many ways. Each of you deserve the recognition for all that you do.
This is an example of the most recent rewarding patient named Terra (shown below). She got an unbelievable title of Master Agility Champion 6, exhibiting superior performance in speed and agility. The 6 refers to the number of times she has met the requirements. This is despite her bilateral iliopsoas strain and medial shoulder syndrome.
|
|
Believe it or not … her first diagnosis was she would never be able to race again, but she overcame those injuries through weekly massage and rehab sessions. Seeing this athlete win is an example of why our patients make it all worthwhile.
Way to go, Terra, and all the vet techs who are unbelievable as well.
