Saturday Memorial Services
The Saturday schedule of our camporee program is designed to give units and all participants lots of choices of things to do. Museums, historic monuments, or the
Omaha Beach Historic Trail are just a few of the possibilities. Our camporee participants have been invited to participate in a variety of memorial services that will be held at 5:00 PM.
As has been a traditional part of our camporee schedule, the British Scouts Overseas have organized a memorial service at the Bayeux War Cemetery.
New this year, the Volksbund has organized a ceremony at the La Cambe German War Cemetery.
Additionally, the Scouts and Guides of France have organized a service at the Kieffer Commandos Monument in Ouistreham. This monument is more than an hour away, has extremely limited parking, and limited facilities.
While Scouts and Scout families are welcome at any of these sites, as noted for the Kieffer Commandos Monument, the facilities are small and thus only a limited number of attendees may be able to have a meaningful experience. We are concerned about overcrowding and the safety issues that could result. The distance to this site can limit the amount of program activities you could otherwise be active with. Carefully consider all your program options for Saturday afternoon.
The Memorial Service on Sunday morning is designed for all camporee participants and there is plenty of parking, as well as place for everyone to have a meaningful experience. The facilities at the American Cemetery in Coleville are designed to handle large numbers of persons (including restrooms) while the others are not.
