The Third Sunday
 in Lent
John 2:13-22

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He
also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned
their tables. He told those who were
selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s
house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

THE GLORY OF THESE FORTY DAYS
Ordination on Friday, March 19, 5 p.m.

On Friday, March 19 at 5 p.m., the Rt. Rev. Douglas J. Fisher will ordain Anna Woofenden and Peter Feltman-Mahan as Transitional Deacons in the Episcopal Church. This is the final step along the road to ordination as Priest. Anna, already ordained in the UCC, is currently Transition Minister at Zion Lutheran in Pittsfield and a campus minister at Amherst. In her role as part of the leadership team of the Good News Gardens Movement in our diocese, Anna will be our guest preacher at Grace on Sunday, March 7. Peter was sponsored for ordination by Grace Church and has most recently completed a discernment internship at Trinity in Lenox. Sr. Warden Kathy Clausen will represent Grace at the Ordination Service at Christ Church Cathedral and present Peter with a gift from this congregation. While only a few people will attend the Ordination Service in person, it will be broadcast virtually. We'll share the link as soon as we receive it.
If you would like to send a congratulatory note or card to Peter, his address is 60 Rowland Dr., Delmar, NY 12054.
A Pastoral Message: The Worst
is Behind Us

February 25, 2021

Even though it is Lent, I am so tempted to shout “alleluia.” I’m hearing some health experts say that the worst of the pandemic is behind us. 1.7 million people a day are getting vaccinated. Pharmaceutical companies are ramping up production of vaccines. Another major company may join them upon approval soon. Wearing masks and physical distancing is working.

Thank you for staying faithful for so long. It has not been easy being faith communities without gathering in person. And yet you have stayed resilient. You have zoomed and live streamed the Good News of Jesus Christ. You have checked in on parishioners who can’t get on line. And you have stayed true to Jesus’ mission of mercy, compassion and hope. You have partnered with other social agencies to address food insecurity in our neighborhoods and provided warm clothing for those in need during a very cold winter. The generosity of the Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement in Western and Central Massachusetts is an inspiration to me.

It is my sincere hope that we can go back to in-person church services in the Easter Season. We would still have to follow all the guidelines we have provided. The first gatherings would be limited and then could grow as the risk of the disease lessens and lessens. We will still be wearing masks and practicing social distancing. And we might have to revise this new timeline if the variants cause the virus to surge again. If that happens, the Spirit will give us more resilience to do the right and loving thing.

The challenges we face remain contextual. One size does not fit all. Some buildings are more conducive to moving indoors than others; some of our congregations have big parking lots and others do not. Most importantly, we continue to pay attention to the science and the numbers and the rollout of vaccines. One of the things we've learned along the way, however, is to work together and to support one another. If the pandemic has taught us anything it is to let go of the temptation to be 'lone rangers.' And what we do in one parish affects, for good or ill, what happens in the neighboring one. For this reason I urge you to continue to have these honest conversations regionally, with your deans, who continue to gather weekly with me and Canons Rich Simpson and Vicki Ix as we have throughout this pandemic.

Thank you for your patience during all these months. You saved lives. We will gather in person for worship soon, I sincerely hope. Even in Lent we pray from the All Saints liturgy: “In the multitude of your saints, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might run WITH ENDURANCE THE RACE THAT IS SET BEFORE US, and together with them receive the crown of glory that never fades away.”

Faithfully in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Douglas J. Fisher
Bishop of Western MA
Diocesan Confirmation Class
10 Online Sessions Beginning March 16th

As we go through our journey in the love of God, we may find that is calling us to express our commitment to Christ in new and more mature ways. God has blessed this part of our spiritual journey and given us the rite of Confirmation where we receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by our bishop.

It has become traditional to prepare for this step of our life in Christ with a period of study, reflection, prayer, and growth. For many people, this season of preparation takes place in their own parish with their parish clergy and friends. One of the opportunities given to us by the pandemic is the chance to broaden our experience by taking advantage of the depth of knowledge and wisdom across the diocese. We have invited leaders to share the best of their expertise in this class.

This course is intended primarily for those looking to be ConfirmedReceived into the Episcopal Church, or for those who wish to Reaffirm their baptismal vows. Confirmation is for those who wish to make a mature declaration of faith. Reception is for those who wish to become formal members of the Episcopal Church. Reaffirmation is for those who have already been confirmed but who wish, as part of their spiritual journey, to make a public restatement of their faith (Don’t worry. We’ll cover all of this at our first meeting.) Regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey, we would like to invite you to be part of this group.
Our time of reflection and study will prepare us for these celebrations with Bishop Fisher at a service on June 6 at 3pm (details to be determined later this spring). This is a wonderful opportunity to refresh our understanding of the faith and to learn with people with might not otherwise get to know.

We are asking you to join us for an hour a week over ten weeks across Lent and Easter. For most of the classes, there will be some reading ahead of time to help us prepare. There will be a brief presentation followed by discussion with the facilitators. We will be meeting via Zoom from 6-7pm on Tuesdays. Each class will last about an hour.

  • March 16 – What is Confirmation? With the Reverend Tanya Wallace and the Reverend Michael Tuck
  • March 23 – The Holy Scriptures with the Reverend Dr. Richard M. Simpson
Break for Holy Week
  • April 6 – The History of the Church with the Reverend Dr. Valerie Bailey Fischer
  • April 13 – The Gift of the Episcopal Church with the Reverend Tanya Wallace
  • April 20 – Care for God’s Creation with the Reverend Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas
  • April 27 – God’s Justice in the World with the Reverend Dr. Harvey Hill
  • May 4 – Living as a Christian with the Reverend Phillip Shearin
  • May 11 – The Sacraments of the Church with the Reverend Nancy Stroud
  • May 18 – Ways of Praying with the Reverend David Woessner
  • May 25 – The Mystery of Easter with Bishop Fisher

We are blessed to have such a depth on insight in our diocese, and we hope that you will join us to share your experiences and wisdom as well.

Lent
A Message from Libby

The Fourth Sunday in Lent, March 14 this year, is often referred to as Refreshment Sunday or Laetare Sunday. Falling mid-Lent, it is a time for relaxing the penitential disciple of Lent. The term 'Laetare' comes from the opening words of the Latin Mass, "Rejoice (Laetare) Jerusalem" (Is. 66:10). We will rejoice together by celebrating an Agape Feast as part of our Zoom worship service on March 14. Please make sure to have your own food and drink ready and a special place prepared, perhaps with a candle or flower and some object that represents a cause for rejoicing in your life.

I am rejoicing this week because a pathology report showed my second surgery on 2/22 was successful in achieving clear margins, i.e., no remaining cancer. While there are still decisions to be made about further treatment to prevent recurrence, I am breathing a deep sigh of relief and giving thanks for the skill of my surgeon. I look forward to being with you again in worship beginning March 7.

Please note in this edition of "Tuesday's Child" the varied opportunities for learning, reflection, and fellowship this Lent: Tuesday Bible Study, Books and Bread, Confirmation Class, Centering Prayer, Sunday School for Children, Third Sunday Supper, and more. You will find refreshment, renewal, and growth in all these gatherings. All are welcome!

Blessings!

COVID VACCINE CALL CENTER OPENING

Since opening COVID vaccinations to those 75 and older, the state has been inundated with complaints from those who have found booking an appointment online difficult to figure out. Gov. Baker today announced the launch of a COVID vaccine call center.

It is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those 75 and older who now qualify for the vaccine can reach it by just dialing 211 and pressing "2" to schedule an appointment. It's available in English and Spanish with translators available for other languages. You may face wait times.
Grace Clergy Transition: Preparing Our Profile
After six months of steady work, the Profile Committee, the Grace Profile will be "live" online at the Grace Church website Monday, March 8. Look for the "Rector Search" button. There are photos, videos, and lots to read about life in the Berkshires, how we Grow in Love by gathering together and how we Go in Love with our community partners. Thank you for your prayers.

Prayer for the Profile Committee
O God, be with our Profile Committee that they may faithfully complete their work, that your Kingdom may come into this time and place through this congregation.

Prayer for the Priest
O God, be with the priest who will recognize your call to walk with
this particular congregation in this particular year.

Pray with Us Daily:

God of abundance and wisdom, you have blessed Grace Church with love and respect for one another and with joy in our community. Help us to discern your will and to be open to your guidance as we seek a new rector for our parish. Grant us the ability to hear your voice as we listen to one another. Give us wisdom and patience, mutual respect, and clarity of vision, that we may choose and receive a priest who serves with warmth and humor, inspiration and faithfulness, and who will lead us where you are calling Grace Church to serve the mission of Jesus in this time and place. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
PRAYERS AND CARES
We supply this list so you may contact members of our congregation who are at home or in a nursing facility. Please hold in your prayers and reach out as you can.

Lent and the Longing for God

Lent calls us back to our deepest longing, our desire for union with the Love that created us.

This morning's online retreat will invite us to explore our desires, as well as the desires of the One “to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid.” We will explore with presentations, guided meditation, with options for solitary reflection or for small group conversation. If you can, bring a candle and matches. At free time, you may wish to have a Bible, Prayer Book, journal and/or art supplies nearby, or a warm coat so that you can head outside.

About the Retreat Leader
The Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas (pictured above) serves as Creation Care Advisor in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, and as Missioner for Creation Care in the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts and in Southern New England Conference, United Church of Christ. CHANGE IN PRAYER LIST ON MARCH 15

Praying for each other and for the needs of the world is a vital part of any faith community, and Grace Church is particularly skilled at this aspect of our communal life. During this time of transition, it’s become apparent that we need to make a few changes in our lengthy prayer list to create a more intentional system of maintaining it. On March 15, the list of “Members of the Parish Family” and “Others We Love” for whom we pray will reset to zero and we’ll begin a fresh new list. We don’t want anyone to fall through the cracks and always want to be generous in our prayers for others.

You can help by sending an e-mail to ([email protected]) if you want a person whose name is currently on the list to stay on the list beyond March 1 or if you want to add someone who isn’t currently on the list. Libby will then keep a record of the date the name was added along with who added it and either she or a member of the Healing Team will periodically call you to check on how that person is doing and if their situation has improved enough to come off the list. We can then give thanks. In this way our prayers can be both generous and more focused

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
I WANT TO HELP
SHINE YOUR LIGHT

In this unpredictable time, your church continues to give thanks for and need your support. If you are capable of sending in your pledge, thank you. If you are unable to give at this time, we understand. If you are capable of giving a bit more so we can respond to the needs of our community, we are very grateful. If you are in need, please contact a member of the Vestry listed at the top of the newsletter. Since we are not gathering in person in community, we ask that you send your gifts via mail to Grace Church, P.O. Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230. We are truly all in this life together. We pray, trusting that God will see us through this season and beyond.

Thank you for giving generously to support the ministry of Grace.

CHANGE THE BABIES
It costs about $1500 a year to support a baby. The Diocese's goal is for one congregation
to support one child for a year.
To donate to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana please send a check to Grace Church, PO Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230.

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EfM)

God makes and renews the Covenant with Israel, in Egypt and during and after the Exodus, over and over again, until in Jeremiah God promises a new covenant. The emerging Christian movement in Jerusalem looks back to Jeremiah to strengthen their claim that God had done something new in Jesus Christ. Our discussion focused on “they will have the law within them.”

31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband,[g] says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. (Jeremiah 31:31-34)

The picture is of structures that the ancient Hebrews built in Egypt before the Exodus.

God, our Lord, who leads us by the hand and has imprinted the Law within us, please make clear your truths and ways, so we may be instruments of your love, in our every word and action. Amen.

Six Week Series at 7 PM beginning Tuesday, March 2
Using the books “Sabbath as Resistance” by Walter Brueggemann as our primary study guide and “The Sabbath” by Abraham Joshua Heschel as a supplement, we hope to explore Sabbath beyond the ideas of simple legal prohibitions and discover together Sabbath’s potential to change the culture in which we live. How do we break our culture’s addiction with consumption and busyness? The Sabbath may just be the answer we’ve been looking for! How will this work? First purchase the book “Sabbath as Resistance” from your favorite independent book seller and read the first chapter. Then join us beginning March 2, 2021 at 7 p.m. for six weeks on Zoom. Rev. Erik Karas along with Rabbi Jodie Gordon and Rabbi Neil Hirsch will facilitate the discussion with congregants from Hevreh, Christ Trinity, Grace, and St. Paul’s. We are excited to have the chance to be with one another before Passover and Easter!
