Chesterfield Fire and EMS Dedicates
New Midlothian Station 5
Nearly 70 years after the Midlothian Volunteer Fire Department built the original Fire Station 5 across Route 60 from what is now Midlothian Middle School, Chesterfield Fire and EMS held a public dedication ceremony Monday morning for its replacement.

The three-bay, 15,000-square-foot station, which is located at the intersection of Midlothian Turnpike and Charter Colony Parkway, opened Sept. 12. Its minimum daily staffing of eight on-duty firefighters provides fire protection and emergency medical services to more than 29,000 residents within an area covering 22.8 square miles.

“Citizens of Chesterfield expect and deserve high-quality public services and this station certainly meets that mark,” said Dr. Mark S. Miller, the Midlothian District’s representative on the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors. “We value the important work of our Fire and EMS department and what they provide to residents and businesses, and we want to make sure our fire safety professionals have the facilities, equipment and training necessary to keep our citizens safe.”

Utilities Plant Manager Retrieves Lost Ball,
Saves the Day for Chesterfield Boy
Dave S., Chesterfield County Utilities Plant Manager, recently came to the rescue when a concerned Brandermill resident emailed the department to let them know that his son's favorite soccer ball had accidentally blown into the Swift Creek Reservoir while at Sunday Park.

"The ball was a special gift to my son, and he was (and remains) very upset about accidentally losing it," the resident wrote in his email.

Dave S. quickly sprang to action and was able to retrieve the 10-year-old boy's special soccer ball with a pool skimmer near the Addison-Evans Water Treatment Facility.

Thank you, Dave S. and the entire Utilities Department for saving the day!

Catch Up on Blog Posts from
In a new article posted to the Chesterfield On Point blog, you can learn about staff's proposal for using the county's fiscal year 2022 operating surplus to mitigate the local tax burden for citizens and businesses.

Following a public hearing at tomorrow's Board of Supervisors meeting, and pending approval by the board, approximately $10 million will be placed into a reserve account for future personal property tax relief. Staff could opt to use the money next year or set it aside indefinitely should assessments on used vehicles fall back within normal ranges in 2023.

Another $5 million has been proposed to accommodate an increasing number of participants in Chesterfield’s real estate tax relief program for the elderly and disabled, as well as raising its income thresholds to ensure that seniors who qualified in 2022 aren’t rendered ineligible next year by an 8.7% increase in their Social Security benefits.

Local Club Donates Family Workstation
to Meadowdale Library
Chesterfield County Public Library (CCPL) has received a donation of a parent and child carrel workstation from Altrusa International of the Capital City of Virginia Club. The carrel, known as the Family Workstation, was donated during a ceremony on Dec. 3 and is located at Meadowdale Library, 4301 Meadowdale Boulevard.

The work and play station allows parents or caregivers to use library resources while their child is next to them in a play area connected to the carrel, which includes a vinyl mat for soft seating or resting, holes for playing peek-a-boo, an acrylic mirror for infants and an activity/learning panel for slightly older children. It is located in the children’s section of the library, providing easy access to board books and picture books.

The Altrusa International of the Capital City of Virginia Club’s donation commemorates Col. Carolyn Weiss Guertin, who was a member. The donation aligns with the club’s purpose: to provide a channel through which women in business and the professions can work together as a force to help solve community and world problems.

Concerned About Lead Paint in Your Home? Apply for Free Assessment and Abatement Program
Did you know that a child’s brain grows rapidly during the first five years of life and research shows lead exposure can harm a child’s health and brain development?!
Children can be directly exposed to this hazard if they live in an older home that contains old lead-based paint, typically built before 1978. Lead-based paint can peel and crack into tiny pieces creating dust that children breath in or swallow.

Fortunately, lead exposure is preventable. Chesterfield County’s Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program was created to protect children five years and younger and expectant mothers from lead exposure. In partnership with our non-profit partner, project:HOMES, families may qualify for a free lead hazard assessment and household repairs to remove hazardous lead exposure from their homes. This program has serviced several homes throughout the county and is currently repairing others that have lead-based paint.

If you’re a caregiver of younger children in an older home, you may also qualify for this program.

To learn more, visit https://www.projecthomes.org/lead. For more information, please contact Emily Hurley by emailing Emily.Hurley@projecthomes.org or calling 804-718-0517.

Chesterfield Offers Tax Exemption
for Rehabilitating Older Homes
Are you aware that Chesterfield County allows a partial real estate tax exemption for the rehabilitation, renovation, or replacement of older residential structures?

The goal of this program is to help protect and preserve our aging neighborhoods. Upon approval, the partial tax exemption will be in effect for 15 years and transfers with the real estate. The amount of the exemption is based solely on increased assessment value, not the amount spent on the improvement project. There is no application fee.
