The Empire State Archives and History Award acknowledges the outstanding contributions by a national figure to advance the understanding and uses of history in society. This year, it is our great pleasure to announce Annette Gordon-Reed, Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard, as our 2021 honoree. Gordon-Reed has won sixteen book prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 and the National Book Award in 2008, for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. In addition to articles and reviews, her other works include Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy; Vernon Can Read! A Memoir, a collaboration with Vernon Jordan; Race on Trial: Law and Justice in American History; Andrew Johnson; and, with Peter S. Onuf, "Most Blessed of the Patriarchs:" Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination. Her most recent work, On Juneteenth, is expected to be published in May 2021.

Join us at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 18—in person or online—as Gordon-Reed sits down with Lincoln scholar and host Harold Holzer for an intimate armchair conversation between two titans of history. An in-person reception for fifty is being planned, but may be subject to change in accordance with COVID-19 safety guidelines set by the CDC. Join Kathryn Murano Santos and Elizabeth Pietrzykowski from the Rochester Museum & Science Center, along with community collaborators Rachel DeGuzman and Wanda Martinez-Johncox, as they discuss how a community curation model can enhance the accuracy, quality, diversity, and authentic representation within an exhibit.

The Changemakers: Rochester Women Who Changed the World aims to inspire and empower the community to be Changemakers by sharing stories of regional innovators just like them.
