May 1 Local Elections: Early Voting Information and Candidates Forum
The City of Garland will hold a General Election for two-year terms for Mayor and Districts 3, 6, 7, and 8 and a Special Election for the final year of an unfinished term in District 1 on May 1, 2021.

Early voting will take place from Monday, April 19, through Tuesday, April 27. Early voting locations in Garland include the Dallas College Garland Campus, 675 W. Walnut St., and the South Garland Branch Library, 3845 Broadway Blvd.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, May 1. Garland residents may vote at any polling place in Dallas County.

The Garland Chamber of Commerce will hold a virtual Candidates Forum at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, where you can learn about the candidates in the May 1 local elections and their positions on governance in our community. Learn more and register at GarlandChamber.com.
COVID-19 Vaccine Updates
The City of Garland Health Department will host its next mass vaccination event from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Johnson Stadium, located at 1029 E. Centerville Road.

This drive-thru event will provide one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines while supplies last with no appointment necessary. To speed up the vaccination process, please print a vaccine registration form from the Vaccine Information webpage and bring the completed form with you.

Those who are due for their second Moderna dose will receive a notification when their appointment is scheduled.

If you’re age 60 or older, you can get your vaccine at the Garland Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver Drive, without an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Anyone who is medically unable to come to the clinic or a mass vaccination event may contact the Garland Health Department at 972-205-3900 to make alternative arrangements.
Updates will be posted to GarlandTX.gov/COVIDVaccine and to the City’s Twitter and Facebook pages as they become available.
Updated COVID-19 Recovery Resources
The City of Garland and other community partners are facilitating access to various recovery programs for residents who have been impacted by COVID-19.

Rental assistance is available through Catholic Charities of Dallas. You can check your eligibility and apply for this assistance online or contact a case manager for assistance by calling 214-257-0674. One-on-one meetings can be scheduled, as needed, between noon and 4 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday at Garland's Central Library, 625 Austin St.

Assistance is available for a variety of services, including financial assistance for housing, utilities, food and medical expenses, as well as workforce training and job placement services, and counseling and emergency shelter.

Celebrate Thirsty Third Thursdays in Downtown Garland from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 15.

Garland Symphony Orchestra Performs Friday, April 16

Earth Day Celebration: Zoom into the Zoo!
Go Green Garland has partnered with the Dallas Zoo for a virtual experience with amazing birds, mammals and reptiles from around the world.

The 45-minute presentation will include zoologists and ambassador animals, with opportunities during and after the program for Q&A.

Two times and dates are available: 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 18. Only one registration per household permitted as space is limited.

Temporary Disaster Exemption Available Following Winter Storm
The Dallas Central Appraisal District (DCAD), in accordance with state law, is offering a temporary disaster exemption following this winter’s devastating storm.

This exemption only applies to damage to buildings or structures, not land value. Property owners must apply for the exemption by May 28, 2021.

This one-time tax exemption is available for business and residential properties that sustained at least 15% of its value in damage. The exemption is only good for the current year and will not change the market value of the property.

To apply for the exemption, go to dallascad.org/forms.aspx. The form is called Exemption Application for Temporary Disaster (11.35). Learn more.

COVID-19 Updates
The Garland Health Department has received reports of 300 active cases out of 27,432 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as 374 deaths. The City will update its posted case numbers each afternoon.

The Garland Plan Commission meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m.
