BLACK STUDENT UNION CELEBRATES
Discrimination can do more than just what is seen or felt on the surface That is why this year's theme for
Black History Month is Mental Health and Wellness.

Discrimination in behavioral health services is one of the underlying causes that can lead to misdiagnosis of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder in minority and underserved communities. According to the US Health & Human Services Office of Minority Health, Black adults in the US are more likely than white adults to report persistent symptoms of emotional distress—such as sadness, hopelessness, and feeling like everything is an effort. Black adults who live below the poverty line are more than twice as likely to report serious psychological stress as those living with financial security. Black Americans are also less likely to seek mental health treatment due to the negative stigma. This reluctance is not without historical merit. Black Americans have been misdiagnosed at higher rates than white patients, and black communities have been exploited by the U.S. government and medical community in the name of medical advancement

If you are interested in being a guest speaker or have questions regarding this opportunity, please contact Amanda Tagle at Amanda.Tagle@horizonhonors.org. We are looking for guest speakers throughout the month of February and dates are flexible. As an alternative, if you are able to participate virtually or submit a video of yourself discussing your career, please contact Amanda for details. Thank you!
