How Do You Pick the Right Animal for your Family?

Before adopting an animal, please remember they are a huge commitment. Here is a great list of questions provided by Best Friends Animal Society that you should think about before adopting:

  • What type of animal is the best fit for your home? Will you be able to live with pet hair, a litter box or the occasional wear-and-tear caused by pets?
  • If you have children, how will having a pet affect them? Will everyone in your home welcome an animal?
  • If you rent, do you have permission from the property owner?
  • How much space do you have inside and outside your home? Will you need a fenced yard?
  • How much time do you have to spend with a pet?
  • What is your activity level? Are you sedentary or physically active?
  • Do you have the financial resources if your pet has a medical crisis and has high veterinary bills?
  • Do you have someone who can be a secondary caregiver if you are away from home? If not, how will you provide care for your pet when you travel?
  • Are you able to commit to the life span of the pet? Dogs can live 10+ years. Cats 15+ years. Are you willing to commit to that time?

Fundraiser Updates

Nadia Surgery Fundraiser

Nadia is an 8-12 month old bully mix who has won the hearts of shelter and veterinarian staff. She came into our shelter as a stray. Her rear legs were visibly awkward with thickened knees and loss of muscle mass. Radiographs showed that she had fractures of both femurs (thigh bones) that have healed abnormally on their own. The films also showed she has a dislocated hip, poor baby. Our vet partner recommended femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery for Nadia.

We started a fundraiser to help raise the money for sweet Nadia's surgery. We needed an estimated $3000 to pay for the surgery that would help give Nadia the quality of life she deserves.

With the help of our village of supporters, we raised $5500 to pay for her surgery, and cover the cost of her aftercare and treatment. Nadia is scheduled for surgery on February 9th and will be recuperating in one of our amazing foster homes. Thank you for helping Nadia.

Betty White Day

On January, 17th, we celebrated what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday. In honor of her memory, many donated to local shelters and animal rescues to celebrate her legacy of kindness and support for animal welfare.

Humane Society staff were humbled by the outpouring of generosity. We raised over $11,181 for our shelter animals, and received many essential supply donations.

Thank you for your support of the Humane Society of Carroll County. Together we save lives.

Cat Room Renovations

Humane Society staff are always striving to make the shelter a better place for the animals that are left in our care. In 2021, while visiting another Maryland shelter, we were inspired to renovate the cat room. We quickly reached out and asked for community support in raising the $57,000 it would take to purchase new cats condos, and retrofit our cat room space to create a better oasis for our felines while in our stay.

At this time, we are happy to report we have raised over $52,000 through donations and fundraisers. The new cat comfort suites are ordered, and we will have a grand revealing when the room is fully renovated.

We are also starting renovations to our community cat room. Please watch for more updates in our next newsletter.

Thank you for your help improving the lives of the cats in our protection while they wait their forever homes.
