Nutrition Myth Busting: While pasta feeds are popular at marathons, did you know that carb-loading is not always the best approach before racing? Similarly, a high carbohydrate diet may not be the best fit for most recreational runners as the energy demand for carbs vs. fat varies by individual, distance and intensity. In many cases, a high carb diet increases the reliance on carbs for fuel during training and racing while inhibiting the body’s ability to burn fat. A low to moderate carb diet with adequate protein and healthy fats can lead to greater metabolic flexibility and may reduce the amount of carbs that need to be consumed during long training runs and races.
