Art Mimics Life
See article about the artwork: Breedlove B. A Dizzying, Complex Spectacle. Emerging Infectious Diseases. 2022;28(4):909-910. doi:10.3201/eid2804.ac2804.
“Swanson’s insouciant image, including domesticated and wild animals from around the world, also works as a metaphor for humankind’s relationships with and connections to other animals through the lens of zoonotic disease. An observer watching such a carousel would see the figures emerge and reemerge, not unlike disease detectives tracking zoonotic diseases. Zoonoses, an unavoidable consequence of the interactions among humans and animals, are caused by harmful germs such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi……… Knowing which animals could have zoonotic diseases proves challenging because both domesticated animals and wildlife may appear well, act healthy, yet carry lethal pathogens ……..Like Swanson’s cycling carousel, emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases―which are transmitted from animals to humans―and the pathogens that cause them, also occur in cycles as they propagate among different ecosystems. The sylvatic cycle occurs in natural settings among wild animals and vectors; the synanthropic cycle occurs where domestic and companion animals live in close association with humans. Other cycles of transmission are human-to-human transmission and human-to-animal transmission. Many interrelated factors, including climate change, modern agricultural practices, destruction of natural habitats, urbanization, and seasonality of infectious diseases, contribute to the complex and dizzying array of zoonoses that pose a challenge to public health.” https://tinyurl.com/5atmaeka

Worth Revisiting

Ruckert A, Zinszer K, Zarowsky C, Labonté R, Carabin H, Can J Public Health. 2020; 111(5): 641-644. doi:10.17269/s41997-020-00409-z
This article highlights four areas where the application of OH has the potential to significantly improve prevention and management of infectious diseases in general, and of COVID-19 in particular.

  1. More integrated surveillance infrastructure and monitoring of the occurrence of infectious diseases in both humans and animals
  2. A One Health approach can improve coordination and active collaboration among stakeholders representing apparently incompatible domains.
  3. Need for an effective institutional landscape, facilitating adequate regulation of hotspots for transmission of infectious agents among animals and humans, such as live animal markets.
  4. Need for equitable solutions to infectious disease challenges; policy and interventions reflective of disproportionate disease burdens borne by vulnerable and marginalized populations, or by persons providing health care. https://bit.ly/3JMst72

Commentaries / Editorials (About the pandemic)

Author: Richard Seifman In: IMPAKTER

“We need collective recognition of these public health dangers, and all Arctic Circle states should address them with greater urgency and specific mitigation and adaptation plans. And to be effective, they require a coordinated and collaborative multidisciplinary preventative approach that involves the widest range of epidemiologists, virologists, human and animal health specialists, social scientists, and other specialists. ……In sum, a One Health approach must be part of the solution. Once adopted, it will move us from good intentions to concrete action.”

The coronavirus has been found in dogs, cats, tigers, lions, gorillas, mink, hamsters and white-tailed deer. Cross-species spillover may result in the establishment of a reservoir that can further drive the emergence of novel variants with potential for spillback to humans. But billions of people haven’t been vaccinated or infected yet, and new variants can incubate in them as well. Worldwide, just 57% of people have been vaccinated, according to OurWorldInData. It’s as few as 11% in Afghanistan and less than 5% in some central African nations. https://bit.ly/36JxG15

The missing link - One Health solutions to universal problems. 6th annual Soulsby Foundation Lecture.
Hosted by the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) Comparative Medicine Section. Old fashioned ‘talk’ (no slides) by Dr. Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet, a United Kingdom–based medical journal, honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University College London, and the University of Oslo. Why should those working in human health be concerned about the health of other animals and the environment? The concept of One Health recognises the interdependency of both environmental factors and the health of all species, including man. This event was designed to bring together interested professionals from various disciplines to explore One Health. View the Event Program.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic is driven by human-to-human transmission, the SARS-CoV-2 virus is also known to infect animal species. Current knowledge indicates that wildlife does not play a significant role in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in humans, but spread in animal populations can affect the health of these populations and may facilitate the emergence of new virus variants…. FAO, OIE and WHO call on all countries to take steps to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission between humans and wildlife with the aim of reducing the risk of variant emergence and for protecting both humans and wildlife.

FAO, which over the last year held the rotating chair of the [One Health] Tripartite….. has played a key role in developing a Joint Plan of Action for One Health. “We have made great strides to advance action on the ground,” said FAO Deputy Director-General Maria Helena Semedo. “What’s also very important is that the One Health approach is now well-anchored on the international agenda in major fora such as the G7, G20, the Global Health Summit and the UN Food Systems Summit,” she added……This progress comes as FAO prepares to hand over the chair to WHO and as the partnership is strengthened with the addition of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). https://tinyurl.com/3bztfz4t

We live in an interconnected world: the health and well-being of the environment, animals, and humans are intertwined in ways that are becoming increasingly apparent. Tackling today’s greatest challenges—whether climate change, pandemics, or drug resistance—requires an approach that recognizes these relationships. As part of our growth, CDDEP is becoming the One Health Trust (OHT). The One Health Trust (OHT) uses research and stakeholder engagement to improve the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. OHT continues and builds on the work of the CDDEP, which for more than a decade has conducted vitally important research on major global health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases, pandemic preparedness and response, vaccines, medical oxygen shortages, and non-communicable diseases. OHT’s work now expands to take on issues related to climate change, biodiversity protection, and the effect of changing human diets on the planet. https://bit.ly/3qBo13I

Joint AVMA-FVE-CVMA statement:
July 2021. Veterinarians work collaboratively with multiple disciplines and stakeholders to protect and advance the health and well-being of animals, humans, and ecosystems (One Health) at the local, national, regional, and international levels. Moreover, veterinarians around the world contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by supporting healthy, productive, and resilient animal and human communities. Veterinarians also work for the direct benefit of the health and welfare of all animals, both for the betterment of the animals themselves and to protect species diversity and ecosystem health; to promote the human-animal bond, which contributes to the emotional and physical wellbeing of both animals and humans; and to advance food security and economic health, particularly in communities in which animals are critical to the provision of transportation, labor, food, and fiber. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) will utilize public outreach campaigns and advocacy efforts to actively promote all roles that veterinarians play in advancing One Health.

March 28, 2022 Former AVMA President Dr. John de Jong expresses strong support and advocacy for the One Health concept/approach. His election to WVA was discussed in a March 7th article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
“I want you all to know that I am an advocate for One Health. I spoke of it during my entire year as President of the AVMA, as well as before and after. I currently serve as Treasurer of the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) and One Health is integral to what that organization does. I just had my first informal meeting of the WVA Incoming Council and suffice it to say that One Health is one of the cornerstones of the strategic plan. It is also a key element of what the WVA does and there is a session at the Congress later this week on One Health. One need look no further than the WVA new website to see the new president's words, Humans, Animals, and Environment, One Planet - One Health…….. Know that I have spoken for years on the importance of One Health and I will continue to do so in my new position.” https://tinyurl.com/5n6fez5y

There is an increasing awareness among campers, hikers, backpackers and other outdoor enthusiasts that while we are enjoying the open spaces that nature has provided us, we should also be educated about the risks that come with the wilderness experience, and be prepared to take safety precautions. View AVMA's tips for outdoor enthusiasts and their pets. https://bit.ly/3wMqV9o

March 2, 2022, Nairobi, Kenya. UNEA brings together representatives of the 193 Member States of the UN, businesses, civil society and other stakeholders to agree on policies to address the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Sponsored by seven Member states, (Ghana, Burkina Faso, Senegal, South Sudan, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan), this pioneering and historic resolution recognizing the link between animal welfare, environment, and sustainable development, was adopted with the overwhelming support of all Member States. The resolution calls on the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to produce a report in close collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Health
Organization (WHO), World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the One-Health High-Level Expert Panel and other stakeholders on the nexus between animal welfare, environment, and sustainable development. https://bit.ly/36IHx7b

Remarks delivered by Inger Andersen at the closing plenary of UNEP@50.
“Yes, UNEA 5.2 and UNEP@50 have delivered. On plastic pollution. On nature-based solutions. On biodiversity and health. On chemicals and waste. But history ultimately will not judge us on resolutions agreed or plans made. It will judge us on actions delivered. It will judge us on whether we create a world without plastic pollution, a world in which we can all live in peace, a world in which the right to a healthy environment is respected and upheld.” https://bit.ly/3qCtgjk

“The health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants and the wider environment are interlinked……… in response to recent large-scale outbreaks of HPAI in wild birds, the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened the Scientific Task Force on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds…..The scientific group said authorities with responsibility for animal health should apply the “One Health” approaches for communicating and addressing avian influenza. This means recognizing that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants and the wider environment are interlinked and acting with a coordinated and unified approach.” https://bit.ly/3qCEaGa

Social sciences are essential to understanding and addressing the root causes of disease and determinants of community health. Without an understanding of how sociological, cultural, economic, demographic, historical, linguistic, geographic, political, and other social dimensions contribute to health, society will be limited in achieving it for all. Social science disciplines are critical to making One Health the default way of doing business at all levels of research, academia, policy, and government. By Chris King, 16 March 2022. HEV-C (orthohepevirus) infection – also known as rat hepatitis E – could be an emerging infectious disease in humans. (Journal of Hepatology.)  This belief is due to the prevalence detected among patients with acute hepatitis of an unknown origin. The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention endorses the report and warns that the virus is present in rodents around the world. That means the risk of transmission from animals is not limited to a specific area. https://bit.ly/384aqeM

Launch of 'One Health' for the Future project hosted by Foraus, a grassroots think tank based in Switzerland. This initiative will explore three major phenomena that the "One Health" approach aims at preventing and addressing: zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and food safety and security threats. What will our future look like if we maintain the status quo? Which scenarios are likely to happen if we do not adopt holistic policy approaches? Dr. Cheryl Stroud, Executive Director, One Health Commission, will share an overview of the full scope of One Health and the global One Health movement. Prof. Vinh-Kim Nguyen, Co-Director of the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, will discuss ‘collapsology’ of health systems and how 'One Health' could help us avoid such collapse. The project will set the foundations for a follow-up workshop with experts and practitioners at the Geneva Health Forum in May. The final output from the whole process will be presented in November at the Science Summit organised in Berlin by the organisation Falling Walls. This project is sponsored by the Rosa-Luxemburg Stiftung with funds of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany. March 30, 2022 Webinar
8-9:30 ET / 2-3:30 CAT
Hosted by the Alliance for African Partnership. For the most part, the discussions related to One Health have been held within the academic fraternity with limited engagements of governments or evidence of effective intersectoral cooperation and action. Furthermore, the few One Health initiatives undertaken for disease prevention and control have had limited monitoring and evaluation of its health and food systems outcomes, making it challenging to effectively make a case to policy makers on the benefits of OH for promoting public health. There remain ongoing questions on what governance mechanism would best promote intersectoral cooperation and how best to operationalize the One Health approach, including scaling capacity-building for implementation in the Global South that already has a high burden of zoonotic diseases and has experienced large disease outbreaks in the last decade. The implementation of OH in the Global South is an important component of global health security. Effective implementation and monitoring of OH in the African region should be prioritised by both resource-constrained and resource-rich nations. https://bit.ly/3usJFIo

One Health approaches are key to sustainably prevent neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), because they recognise the links between human, animal and environmental health; and take a ‘whole of system’ approach to action. One Health: approach for action against neglected tropical diseases 2021-2030 is a companion document to the road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021-2030. It aims to support a range of stakeholders - including countries in which NTDs are endemic, international organizations and non-State actors - to achieve the road map targets through a transdisciplinary, cross-cutting One Health approach. This webinar will launch the companion document, highlight key concepts, and share experiences of One Health in action. See an overview of the webinar.  Recording Available.

February 9-10, 2022 Workshop
Hosted by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Research to advance understanding of the ecology and biology of wildlife species is more important than ever as the world confronts issues ranging from biodiversity loss to the emergence of zoonotic diseases. This workshop focused on issues associated with the unique welfare challenges of conducting research with biologically diverse vertebrates living in varied habitats, for which guidance resources on wildlife research sometimes conflict and recommendations outlined in the current version of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (8th edition) can present challenges. Discussion topics included perspectives on animal welfare considerations; laws, regulations, and permits associated with fish and wildlife; wild animal population concerns; the role of veterinarians in wildlife research; restraint and handling of animals in the field; and transition of wild animals to captive settings. https://bit.ly/3AttFZb

Call for One Health approach papers -
Special Issue of Food and Waterborne Parasitology (FawPar)
In honour of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day (Jan 30, 2022), this Special Issue of FAWPAR especially explores One Health approaches incorporating human, animal, and environmental perspectives. Neglected diseases affect the poorest populations and in turn perpetuate poverty, and are often given little attention in the scientific literature. In addition to the officially listed Neglected Tropical Diseases caused by food and/or waterborne parasites, the editors of this special issue take an expansive view, encouraging discussion of the case for neglect of unlisted parasites, especially in light of the impact of the COVID public health emergency. Submissions addressing old and new solutions to end the neglect, including environmental detection and clinical diagnosis and drug and vaccine development, efficacy, accessibility, and equity are encouraged. Submission deadline: November 30, 2022. https://tinyurl.com/2p9846nz

Special Issue in the journal Pathogens
According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), 60% of human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and 75% of emerging human infectious diseases are zoonoses. The current coronavirus pandemic forcibly brings this information home. The resistance of bacteria to antibiotics can in some respects also be considered a zoonosis, and therefore should be treated as such....The OIE also states that 72% of 60 emerging infectious diseases that have an animal origin or reservoir, are of wildlife origin, and 144 human diseases originating from pathogens in wild animals have become important to human health in the past 60 years. Therefore, it is urgent that we expand and effectively disseminate our knowledge on wildlife as a reservoir of zoonotic agents. To this end, we urge you to submit articles to this new Special Issue of PathogensDeadline for manuscript submissions: November 30, 2022. More information. https://bit.ly/3JGEbjE
