“Swanson’s insouciant image, including domesticated and wild animals from around the world, also works as a metaphor for humankind’s relationships with and connections to other animals through the lens of zoonotic disease. An observer watching such a carousel would see the figures emerge and reemerge, not unlike disease detectives tracking zoonotic diseases. Zoonoses, an unavoidable consequence of the interactions among humans and animals, are caused by harmful germs such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi……… Knowing which animals could have zoonotic diseases proves challenging because both domesticated animals and wildlife may appear well, act healthy, yet carry lethal pathogens ……..Like Swanson’s cycling carousel, emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases―which are transmitted from animals to humans―and the pathogens that cause them, also occur in cycles as they propagate among different ecosystems. The sylvatic cycle occurs in natural settings among wild animals and vectors; the synanthropic cycle occurs where domestic and companion animals live in close association with humans. Other cycles of transmission are human-to-human transmission and human-to-animal transmission. The coronavirus has been found in dogs, cats, tigers, lions, gorillas, mink, hamsters and white-tailed deer. Cross-species spillover may result in the establishment of a reservoir that can further drive the emergence of novel variants with potential for spillback to humans. But billions of people haven’t been vaccinated or infected yet, and new variants can incubate in them as well. Worldwide, just 57% of people have been vaccinated, according to OurWorldInData. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is driven by human-to-human transmission, the SARS-CoV-2 virus is also known to infect animal species. Current knowledge indicates that wildlife does not play a significant role in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in humans, but spread in animal populations can affect the health of these populations and may facilitate the emergence of new virus variants…. FAO, OIE and WHO call on all countries to take steps to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission between humans and wildlife with the aim of reducing the risk of variant emergence and for protecting both humans and wildlife.

Experts from the University of Sao Paulo (USP) developed a platform intended to store data on multi-resistant bacteria with genomic, epidemiological, and phenotypic information. CABI One Health, a new open access journal, due to be launched later this year as part of a new set of trans-disciplinary One Health resources, is now open for submissions. One Health Cases will provide a growing database of peer-reviewed educational, practical cases, and will be an invaluable resource for students, teachers, academics, public stakeholders, and industry practitioners. A One Health Knowledge Bank will follow later this year, and will be a hub of relevant knowledge, information and data, including journal articles, cases, book chapters, curated species datasheets, and an extensive collection of hard-to-find grey literature in a single searchable database. Outbreak READY! is a digital simulation strengthening the readiness of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to respond to large-scale infectious disease outbreaks in humanitarian contexts. Through a unique, digital interpretation of an outbreak simulation, READY brings the complex nature of a humanitarian outbreak response to life utilizing a computer-based serious game that allows participants to test and refine their readiness skills and knowledge. Veterinarians work collaboratively with multiple disciplines and stakeholders to protect and advance the health and well-being of animals, humans, and ecosystems (One Health) at the local, national, regional, and international levels. Moreover, veterinarians around the world contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by supporting healthy, productive, and resilient animal and human communities. Veterinarians also work for the direct benefit of the health and welfare of all animals, both for the betterment of the animals themselves and to protect species diversity and ecosystem health; to promote the human-animal bond, which contributes to the emotional and physical wellbeing of both animals and humans; and to advance food security and economic health, particularly in communities in which animals are critical to the provision of transportation, labor, food, and fiber. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) will utilize public outreach campaigns and advocacy efforts to actively promote all roles that veterinarians play in advancing One Health.

March 28, 2022 Former AVMA President Dr. John de Jong expresses strong support and advocacy for the One Health concept/approach. His election to WVA was discussed in a March 7th article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
“I want you all to know that I am an advocate for One Health. I spoke of it during my entire year as President of the AVMA, as well as before and after. I currently serve as Treasurer of the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) and One Health is integral to what that organization does. I just had my first informal meeting of the WVA Incoming Council and suffice it to say that One Health is one of the cornerstones of the strategic plan. It is also a key element of what the WVA does and there is a session at the Congress later this week on One Health. This belief is due to the prevalence detected among patients with acute hepatitis of an unknown origin. The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention endorses the report and warns that the virus is present in rodents around the world. Launch of 'One Health' for the Future project hosted by Foraus, a grassroots think tank based in Switzerland. This initiative will explore three major phenomena that the "One Health" approach aims at preventing and addressing: zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and food safety and security threats. What will our future look like if we maintain the status quo? Which scenarios are likely to happen if we do not adopt holistic policy approaches? Dr. Cheryl Stroud, Executive Director, One Health Commission, will share an overview of the full scope of One Health and the global One Health movement. Prof. Vinh-Kim Nguyen, Co-Director of the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, will discuss ‘collapsology’ of health systems and how 'One Health' could help us avoid such collapse. The project will set the foundations for a follow-up workshop with experts and practitioners at the Geneva Health Forum in May. The final output from the whole process will be presented in November at the Science Summit organised in Berlin by the organisation Falling Walls. Hosted by the Alliance for African Partnership. For the most part, the discussions related to One Health have been held within the academic fraternity with limited engagements of governments or evidence of effective intersectoral cooperation and action. Furthermore, the few One Health initiatives undertaken for disease prevention and control have had limited monitoring and evaluation of its health and food systems outcomes, making it challenging to effectively make a case to policy makers on the benefits of OH for promoting public health. There remain ongoing questions on what governance mechanism would best promote intersectoral cooperation and how best to operationalize the One Health approach, including scaling capacity-building for implementation in the Global South that already has a high burden of zoonotic diseases and has experienced large disease outbreaks in the last decade. The implementation of OH in the Global South is an important component of global health security. The FDA One Health Steering Committee (OHSC) has partnered with the Association of Government Health & Environmental Scientists (AGHES) to hold a fun and educational competition between Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Research Fellows based at FDA for proposals of One Health-related scientific projects that FDA could hypothetically support. ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy program that supports training of the next generation of science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM) professionals . The goal of the competition is to promote and better understand One Health concepts in work at FDA. Round 1 presentations were held in February 2022 and the 4 finalists progressed to Round 2 of the competition on March 8. The winning pitch was Epidemiology Study and Evaluation of Currently Available Leprosy Diagnostic Tests presented by Yoon Lee, an ORISE Fellow in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). Yoon’s proposal conveyed a multi-disciplinary approach that would be relevant to people, animals, and the environment. Congratulations Yoon!

In honour of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day (Jan 30, 2022), this Special Issue of FAWPAR especially explores One Health approaches incorporating human, animal, and environmental perspectives. Neglected diseases affect the poorest populations and in turn perpetuate poverty, and are often given little attention in the scientific literature. In addition to the officially listed Neglected Tropical Diseases caused by food and/or waterborne parasites, the editors of this special issue take an expansive view, encouraging discussion of the case for neglect of unlisted parasites, especially in light of the impact of the COVID public health emergency. Special Issue in the journal Pathogens
According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), 60% of human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and 75% of emerging human infectious diseases are zoonoses. The current coronavirus pandemic forcibly brings this information home. The resistance of bacteria to antibiotics can in some respects also be considered a zoonosis, and therefore should be treated as such....The OIE also states that 72% of 60 emerging infectious diseases that have an animal origin or reservoir, are of wildlife origin, and 144 human diseases originating from pathogens in wild animals have become important to human health in the past 60 years. Therefore, it is urgent that we expand and effectively disseminate our knowledge on wildlife as a reservoir of zoonotic agents.
