Bishop’s Statement on Kansas City Shooting

Missouri Bishop Robert Farr has released a statement regarding yesterday’s mass shooting in Kansas City. One person was killed and 22 were shot at the Kansas City Chiefs Superbowl victory celebration yesterday afternoon. At least half of the victims were under 16 years old. At this time it is being reported that two of the three people detained are juveniles and the shooting started as a personal dispute. Read the Bishop’s statement and access resources for Prayer, Learning, Assisting, and Advocacy for responding to gun violence at https://www.moumethodist.org/newsdetail/18265982

Dear Friends,

My husband, Steve, like many of us, has stories about what went on in the school lunchroom during his late elementary and junior high years. More than once, Steve has recounted to our children the story of Will, (not his real name) who would frequently compress one, two, or three slices of white bread from his and others’ lunch trays into a nice round ball with a pat of butter at the center for flavor. No matter how many pieces of bread were used, once the creation was complete, Will would then pop the entire aptly named “dough ball” into his mouth and enjoy it as part of his lunch.

When my mom died last year, Will, whose family farm is near my parents’ farm, came to the funeral home for visitation. When Will was introduced to our son, Ben, Ben immediately recognized Will’s name and said, “You’re the guy who ate the dough balls at lunch.”

I think Will was amazed that this part of his life story had made its way decades later into Shirar family lore. In fact, I think it took him a while to recall making and eating those “dough balls.” But this part of Will’s story has indeed lived on!

Sometimes it’s hard to predict which stories will stay with us over the years. While this story of lunchroom shenanigans is not of great consequence, more often it seems the stories that follow us into our futures are the ones that we would really like to shake off and leave behind.

This Sunday we will remember the story of Peter, focusing on what must have been the worst night of Peter’s life—the night he denied knowing Jesus, after adamantly insisting just hours before that he would never do such a thing. All four gospels tell this story and it is remembered nearly without fail each year when we re-tell the story of Jesus’ passion and death.

But the story we don’t tell nearly as frequently about Peter is the story of his encounter with Jesus after the resurrection—the story of grace the resurrected Jesus gave to Peter as they spoke in a private conversation on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

On Sunday we will re-tell this story and celebrate the power of the resurrection that could bring Peter redemption and reclaim his life. We will celebrate that the power of the resurrection can do the same for us.

It is such a gift to know that as we gather for worship and in the days before and after, we have this offer of grace and the chance to begin again as we live in the power of the resurrection of Jesus. God be with us as we seek to be those who live into this marvelous gift.

In resurrection hope,

Pastor Kim

“Celebrate Love” was the theme for the February 15 Community Unity Center dinner held in Fellowship

Hall.

Approximately seventy persons enjoyed a pasta dinner with ice cream sundaes for dessert and had a chance to speak with our special guest for February, Police Chief Matt Nighbor.

Upon entering Fellowship Hall, everyone was invited to write their answer the question, “What do you love about yourself?” on a card. The responses are displayed on a garland under the clock in Fellowship Hall.

As a way of celebrating Black History Month, Mrs. Perry created a display of brief biographies with photographs of Black persons who have significantly impacted St. Louis or Missouri. These biographies will be upstairs in the sanctuary area for the next two weeks. When you are in the church building, take your time to read the stories! Then be sure to visit Fellowship Hall to see the “Celebrate Love” themed decorations, the LOVE banner that was colored by a number of dinner guests, and the garland under the clock!

The next Community Unity Center Dinner will be on the third Thursday, March 21, from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.  If you have yet to take part in a dinner…the food is great, the crafts are fun, and the fellowship is fabulous. You are invited!! Please come!
