School News You Can Use
Three things you need to know:
  1. Next week's schedule: Monday - LS day, Tuesday - 78 day, Wednesday - 56 Day, Thursday - 34 day, Friday - 12 day
  2. The state-required PSAT and SAT tests for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will take place on Wednesday, April 13 (and extended testing for select students on Thursday, April 14). Please see the Message from the Principal and your email for more details.
  3. The Academic Challenge Team, Indoor Track and Field, Coach Winiecki, and a DHS Alum have been pretty successful these past few weeks...plus a special viewing of Moana! Check out the Student Life section for all the details.
Message from the Principal
Dear DHS staff, students, and families, 

I hope that you had a wonderful Spring Break. We are in the final stretch of the school year - an incredibly busy stretch of the year. In addition to the day-to-day academic and extracurriculars, we have a number of special events and days coming up. With that in mind, please see my note below about SAT and PSAT testing and the schedule for classes that week.

SAT and PSAT Testing (Week of April 11-15)

All students and families should have received an email detailing the schedule for SAT and PSAT testing the week of April 11-15.

The schedule for that week is:
  • Monday - 100 day
  • Tuesday - 100 day
  • Wednesday - No classes; Testing for freshmen (PSAT), sophomores (PSAT), and juniors (SAT)
  • Thursday - No classes; Testing continues for select students (students will know if they have extended testing on Thursday); Optional Teacher Office Hours from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m
  • Friday - No School (Holiday)

Please see your email for additional details about testing for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

Signs of Suicide
  • Major changes in behavior
  • Sounding really down or helpless
  • Talking about suicide
  • Sleeping more or less
  • Increased anger or agitation
  • Increased anger or agitation
  • Withdrawal from family or friends

If you are having concerns about your student, reach out to their pediatrician or school counselor.
  • Most people thinking about suicide are struggling with a mental health condition like depression.
  • With professional help, people begin to feel much better.

Teach your student to find a trusted adult to talk to. 
To help, make a list of trusted adults: think about family members, friends’ parents, teachers and others.


How to ACT
  • Acknowledge concerns about their emotions or a friends’ reaction.
  • Care by listening and taking their emotions seriously.
  • Tell make yourself available as a safe person.

Musical Theatre Winnetka Program Presents Moana Jr.
Congratulations to Jaden Johnson for his performance in Moana Jr. with the Musical Theatre Winnetka (Wednesday Cast).

Tickets for the viewing virtually are still available until Wednesday, April 20 @ 7:00 pm.

Deerfield High School Academic Challenge Team Sectional Champions
Deerfield High School Academic Challenge Team finished in first place at the Sectional Tournament among 12 teams competing. The highest possible team score is 500 points. The top 5 teams were:

Deerfield 487.79
New Trier 482. 60
Stevenson 482.23
Buffalo Grove 458.62
Evanston 431. 29

Individual Award Winners for Deerfield:
  • Yaokai Yang - 1st place in Computer Science
  • Samantha Gass - 1st place in English
  • Tim Nagel - 2nd place in Biology
  • Yijia Wang - 2nd place in Computer Science
  • Noah Meyerhoff - 2nd place in English

2022 CSL North Varsity Indoor Conference Champions
Congratulations to the Boys Indoor Track & Field team for earning the 2022 CSL North Varsity Indoor Track and Field Conference Championship!

Deerfield qualified Eric Lakemaker (800m), Josh Pirogovsky (Shot Put) and the 4x800m Relay (Evan Morris, Lucas Moskovitz, Cole Bernstein, Ryan Bernstein, Eric Lakemaker) for the 3A Illinois Top Times Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Indoor Track & Field 4x800m Team Championship Runner-Up
Congratulations to the 4x800m relay for taking 2nd place with a time of 8:04.35 at the 3A Illinois Top Times Indoor Track and Field Championships!
Coach Steve Winiecki Inducted into Illinois Football Coaches HOF
Congratulations to Coach Steve Winiecki on his induction into the Illinois Football Coaches Hall of Fame!
DHS Alum ('15), Chris Douglas, 5th in World in 60m Hurdles
Chris Douglas, DHS 2015 Graduate, took 5th place in the 60m hurdles at the World Indoor Championships.

While at DHS, Douglas was a 300m hurdles champ for the IHSA state competition. He went on to compete at the University of Iowa earning the Big Ten Championship in 400m hurdles, in addition to numerous other accolades in NCAA competition.
