Pesticide Application Alert
On March 13th the annual dormant oil spray will be applied to the trees and shrubs at our school. This spray application consists of one gallon of mineral oil mixed in 80 gallons of water to cover and kill dormant insect eggs that overwinter in our area. Our school has taken steps to keep school children away from these areas for 24 hours following the application of spray. We would like to ask that you and your children refrain from brushing up against or playing around the trees and shrubs at our school. A variation from this schedule may occur as a result of inclement weather. Thank you!

- March 18th-22nd - online donations drive
- March 25th-28th - "Shot Outs" sold during lunches & change drive during advisory

(A "Shot Out" is a basketball themed croc charm/bracelet charm. "Shot Outs" are personalized and added to the bags of candy.)
The theme of the event is the more your give, the more you get. Each students' donations are credited to their advisory class. The more money received, the more their bags are filled with goodies!

Looking ahead at the spring testing schedule:
MAP testing starts in March, and SBAC testing starts in May. Please see the table below for testing days. Please try to have your student(s) here on time on testing days, and limit removing students from class early to avoid disruptions to testing. We understand that there are times when this cannot be avoided and ask that you call in advance so we can have passes made up ahead of time. Thank you for your cooperation.

Adventure Club Returns
The adventure club took a short winter break but is ready to be back in action this March with the Spring Focus on hiking! We have some local hikes coming up and will be choosing our Saturday Summit for May. Students who missed out can join us to learn about trail etiquette, leave not a trace, and how to stay safe with the 13 essentials. Join us on Tuesdays after school in room 111. Be dressed for the weather and have your walking shoes on because we walk from the very first meeting. Hope to see you all there!

VISUAL ART
Hi everyone! I'm Colleen MacIver, the visual art teacher at Salk Middle School. At Salk, art is a semester long class, but students have the option of taking art all year if it fits into their schedules.
We do different projects each semester and every year to keep things fun and interesting. We just completed identity jar drawings during the first week of class. Currently, students are finishing up a unit on tinting and mixing colors by painting giant hearts and flowers to celebrate Valentines Day. Next up on the agenda is a unit to celebrate Black History month where we will be creating a mixed media piece inspired by African American Artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. Look for these projects to be coming home the first week in March.
We also have the Spokane Public Middle School Art Show in March. You can see all the beautiful work created by middle school students across the district at the Kress Art Gallery, behind the food court, at Riverpark Square downtown. There will be an opening night celebration on Friday, March 1st. I hope to see all of you there.

Vaccination Reminder
All students going into the 7th grade need to have an up-to-date vaccine record showing they received the Tdap immunization after age 11, or an up-to-date certificate of exemption letter signed by a doctor on file before they start 7th grade.

Music Department Fundraiser
The Salk Music Department Spaghetti Feed and Silent Auction is back! On April 18th, we will be hosting a spaghetti dinner from Ferraro's Italian Restaurant. It will include a silent auction and live music. We are in need of items for the silent auction. If you own a business or would like to donate any items for the silent auction, please contact Natalie Cominiello at 509-354-5606 or natalieco@spokaneschools.org. If you would like to donate money toward the cost of dinner, please contact Dawn Sapp at 509-354-5606 or dawnsapp@spokaneschools.org. We use the proceeds from this event to help cover costs of equipment and take the music students to Silverwood in the spring. Thank you for supporting the Salk music department!
