BOARD MEETING TUESDAY, APRIL 19 AT 5:30PM

William P. Clements Jr. Leadership Center, 6900 Douglas Ave.

In March, the literacy subcommittee made a recommendation to phase out Lucy Calkins Units of Study in grades K-8, engage an outside consultant to guide HPISD’s transition to align instruction with the Science of Reading, and to update the district’s literacy framework.

The board will vote on this recommendation at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 19 at 5:30pm. Please plan to attend to show support for the significant changes that are needed in the district’s approach to literacy.

Also, the HPLC wrote an open letter to HPISD trustees and administration to thank them for their work in charting a new path for literacy in HPISD. Read the letter here.

SBOE QUESTIONS TEA ABOUT LITERACY CURRICULUM

Three cheers for State Board of Education (SBOE) member Dr. Audrey Young! At a recent meeting, SBOE member Dr. Audrey Young said: “Many districts have chosen to go with what's popular, like Lucy Calkins or Fountas and Pinnell, without truly knowing the academic impact . . .”

She then asked TEA Commissioner Mike Morath how the Texas Education Agency will ensure school districts adopt high-quality instructional materials to complement the training our teachers are receiving through the Texas Reading Academies to ensure ALL Texas children can read!

The HP Literacy Coalition appreciates Dr. Young and Commissioner Morath’s leadership encouraging schools to provide high-quality instructional materials for students and teachers.
