Your connection to positive aging.

Symposium Highlights

As we kick off a new year of educational events, we are pleased to share highlights and key take-aways from last season's symposiums. ‘Compassion Through Comedy' was an interactive event focused on the positive effect shared laughter has on people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive challenges. Dani Klein Modisett, Founder and Chief Executive Officer for Laughter On Call partnered with Comedian and Actor Nikki Ghisel to share how levity can enhance connection, support self-care, and promote healing and wellness. The sessions provided information and techniques for caregivers and professionals working in aging services. One of the helpful techniques the speakers shared with the participants is called BHILATYS, an acronym, developed to help strengthen the caregiver core. Keep the below tips in mind if you are caring for a loved one with cognitive challenges.

Need a little extra support? Jewish Senior Life offers a variety of memory care services, including daytime programs, care options, and residences for adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments. Watch What You Hear!

The Hearing Loss Association of America delivered a presentation at The Summit at Brighton to share information about hearing loss and actions that can be taken to address hearing impairments. In addition to the seminar, an express Hearing Check Kiosk was available for individuals to test their hearing and receive tips from the experts. For more information visit hearingloss.org.

A Word from the Director,

Courtney Porray

Thank you very much for your interest and participation in The Clare & Jerry Rotenberg Institute on Aging at Jewish Senior Life. Reflecting on all of the accomplishments in 2023, I am incredibly excited for what will come in 2024! We are planning a robust calendar of innovative programs with experts and resources to promote positive aging. Here is a sneak peek at some of the topics we are working on for the next few months:

  • How to effectively communicate with your health care providers - save the date for May 9!
  • Eye Health with a special focus on Macular Degeneration
  • Technology and Innovation in Aging Services
  • Falls Prevention
  • Alternative Therapies for Older Adults

I recently read a Forbes Health article featuring 10 Pieces of Expert Advice on Aging Well. The piece of advice that stuck with me the most was, keep doing the things that work for you. To help you maintain a healthy, happy, and rewarding life, the author shared that it is important to continue taking care of your body, develop and maintain relationships that matter, continue to learn and be intellectually challenged, and contribute to the world around you. But most importantly, wake up every morning looking forward to the day ahead!
