An astounding 50% of Lake County children enter kindergarten without the sufficient skills and knowledge to engage in kindergarten-level instruction. These children are at risk of being left behind throughout school and life. Studies show that children who begin kindergarten prepared to learn are more likely to stay engaged in school and be on track to graduate from high school; will be less likely to receive government assistance in adulthood; will have lower rates of felony arrest, convictions, and incarcerations; and will be more likely to go to college, own a home and earn well above the median income.
This is why United Way of Lake County supports early childhood development and education programs, kindergarten readiness programs, after-school programs, tutoring, reading, and mentoring programs - all to prevent children from suffering the lasting effects of early childhood adversity and trauma.
Last year alone, the gifts we received helped provide:
- 6,024 Pre-K children with one free Dolly Partin Imagination Library book mailed to their homes each month for a year in support of childhood literacy and kindergarten readiness
- 20,000 Elementary and preschool children with reading programs in support of literacy
- 7,954 Children with mentors and youth enrichment programs
With your help this GivingTuesday and through this holiday season, we can continue to help ensure no child goes to bed hungry and that opportunities are within reach for all children to succeed in school.
