MONDAY MEMO
Any Riverside Head of School recognizes their job is much more than administrator; recently Roy has become trombone instructor to 6th graders Julian and Raleigh!
Hello Riverside,

We've got two weeks left before February break and then we come back to middle school Play Week and other signs of spring.

Happy Monday,
Nelia

NOTES
SPELLING BEE
This Wednesday morning during assembly we will have our school Spelling Bee. Each 3-8th grade class has selected students to represent them and we look forward to a fun competition to celebrate these wonderful spellers! Parents are welcome to join us.
HIGH MOWING SEEDS FUNDRAISER
Paper packets and payments for the seed fundraiser are due back to Riverside this Friday, February 16th. The online version of the order form will close on Tuesday (tomorrow!), to give everyone time to collect orders and money from the friends and family who placed orders. We cannot accept late orders so please get your packets back this week! Checks can be made out to The Riverside School. Seeds should arrive by mid-March. If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email Carrie Stahler (6th grader Victor) 802-229-9226. Thanks for your support!
STUDENT COUNCIL: OPEN MIC and MAC & CHEESE CONTEST
This Thursday, February 15 at 6:30 pm, the Riverside Student Council will be hosting a Mac & Cheese Cookoff and Open Mic Night. Anyone who is a member of the Riverside community is welcome (ie parents, grandparents, students ex teachers ect.) and admission is free. We have already had several wonderful volunteers who want to make mac and cheese, but if any talented mac chefs want to make some, please email Julian Garvin. All entries should be in the Riverside barn by 4:45. We also need talented actors, singers, musicians, or poets. Students of all ages are welcome to perform. If anyone would like to participate in the open mic performances, please email Sawyer Daffinrud. Students younger than 5th grade are expected to have an adult accompanying them, and as a reminder this is a sit-down event, so children must behave and be calm for the duration of it.

If anyone has emailed Julian or Sawyer you may want to confirm with them that you're going to participate. We are still looking for more volunteers to make mac and cheese, so if you're interested please email Julian before Wednesday evening.
FRIDAY ADVENTURES
The intention was for this Friday to be the last of our afternoon programs sliding on snow. Next Friday, February 23 is our annual Winter Carnival and half day (and the mountain is closed to School Programs because that's a holiday week for the resort), more information about that below. We hoped to begin with K-2nd grade swim program the following Friday, March 8. However, the SJA pool is closed for repairs, and it's still unclear if or when we will be able to take our youngest students swimming. And so, we have inquired about additional dates for the downhill program in March.

Also, conditions for the Cross Country Program at the Dashney Trails are not ideal. Those families should stay tuned for information from Joel and Caroline about alternate plans this week.

Middle School Families: This Friday's schedule will be:
  • 6th Gr: Science, English, Math
  • 7th Gr: English, Math, Latin
  • 8th Gr: Math, Science, World Issues
WINTER CARNIVAL
Next Friday, February 23 will be our annual Winter Carnival, a chance for the house groups to cooperate and compete while celebrating the "winter" season. We may have to make some modifications to the usually snow-inspired activities, but fun will be had in a spirit of patient leadership and supportive community nonetheless. Parents are welcome to join us for any part of the morning they wish, if they'd like to join in the fun!

The day will end with an early dismissal for all PK-8 students at 12:30. The PK Afterschool and K-8 Extended Day Programs will run until their usual end times. Please email McKenna or Sean if your child will attend and what time you plan to pick up so that they can plan the long afternoon accordingly. If we don't get any RSVPs, then we won't offer the program.
CALENDAR: STANDARDIZED TESTING
We have finalized the dates for our annual Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program testing. We hope families can make it a priority to have students in school as much as possible during these testing days, so that we don't have to confuse the schedule or add teacher hours to handle make up testing.
  • 8th Gr Science: March 27
  • 6-8th Gr Math: April 2-4
  • 3-5th Gr Math & ELA: April 8-12
  • 6-8th Gr ELA: April 16-18
4-8 SPRING FIELD TRIP
This year's Spring Field Trip will combine all 4-8th graders in Quebec City, Quebec, May 15-17! Thank you to the chaperones who signed up and confirmed they'll be joining us. Adults will need a valid passport or enhanced license to cross the border. All 4-8th graders will need either a passport or an original/certified copy of their birth certificate. These documents will be carried by an adult throughout the trip. We also already have your signed consent for field trips, including international, as part of the annual forms you completed at the start of the year. Nelia is collecting documentation for students now, and needs to have them all in by Monday, May 13.
