Dear sixth grade families,

On Monday June 7th the sixth grade will be taking a walking trip to Chinatown and Franklin Square. Our day will begin with guest speaker, David Dettmann, the Associate Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His talk will focus on the history of Chinatown, specifically how the neighborhood's demographics have changed over time, and how local pride developed as Chinese and Southeast Asian populations fought to keep this neighborhood intact. After our morning talk, we will walk over to Franklin Square Park which is the starting place for the Chinatown Scavenger Hunt.  After completing our scavenger hunt, we will return to Franklin Square for a picnic lunch before returning to school.

Students will need to wear: Comfortable clothes and shoes for walking

Students will need to bring: A packed lunch, a water bottle, sunscreen, and a small backpack in which to carry their belongings. We will not be purchasing anything en route.

We will be in groups of eight and it will be important for students to stay with their group during the walking portions of the day. Please remind your child of the importance of staying with their group and being mindful of traffic. As this is a school trip, students are not permitted to bring any electronic devices with them. Each teacher will have a cell phone in case of emergencies.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

In partnership,
Trs. Anne, La, Carlzel, Maureen, and Steph
