"With the expectation of an abundance of doses coming in from the federal government through the end of this month and into May, we can confidently say by June 15 that we can start to open up as business as usual - subject to ongoing mask wearing and ongoing vigilance."

Newsmaker Connection with California Redistricting Commissioner Derric Taylor
This week, VICA held our Newsmaker Connection, which gives members insight into relevant public policy while providing an opportunity to discuss it with an expert! This event, sponsored by State Farm, was a special redistricting-focused Newsmaker Connection featuring California Redistricting Commissioner Derric Taylor.
The discussion revolved around the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, protection of the San Fernando Valley as a community of interest, and ways to get involved with the Commission's decision-making process. Commissioner Taylor shared with members the importance the redistricting process because, "as communities change, grow, and shrink, the numbers can become unequal." The presentation was thoughtful and informative, and provided great insight into how the 2020 California Redistricting Commission seeks to keep California's voices heard through the redistricting process.
Following the presentation, a Q&A session was held. Questions from VICA members included interest in the commission's outreach process and how local elected officials are impacted by the redistricting process. In response, Commissioner Taylor shared that outreach leads to firsthand testimony from community members sharing how they define the boundaries of their own communities.
Overall, this Newsmaker Connection was a very insightful event for VICA members! Thank you so much to State Farm for sponsoring this event, and to Commissioner Derric Taylor for sharing his insight on the redistricting process.

California's "Beyond the Blueprint for a Safer Economy"
As California reaches a milestone of 20 million COVID-19 vaccines administered while case rates and hospitalizations have stabilized, California is looking to fully reopen the economy. The state has announced that on June 15th, all industries across the state can return to usually operations with common sense risk reduction measures like masking and vaccinations. This "Beyond the Blueprint for a Safer Economy" will be triggered on June 15 if vaccine supply is sufficient for all Californians 16 and older and when cases and hospitalizations stay low.
These new openings include schools and universities conducting full-time, in-person instruction and reopening business as usual. The state will start by expanding the capacity of outdoor sectors, ensuring vaccine equity, and allowing increased indoor capacity.
VICA is excited for these new changes and looks forward to the rebuilding of our businesses, communities, and economy.

Opposing Policies that Will Make Housing Costlier
This week. VICA made great efforts to advocate for the concerns of our business community, of those concerns was the expansion of Fire District 1, which was heard at the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday. While VICA appreciated efforts to address and prevent wildfires in our region, we have concerns with the impact this policy could potentially have on construction in Los Angeles. The policy seemed to counter efforts to end the housing crisis, as it would negatively impact housing production by limiting certain construction types in parts of Los Angeles. Current wood structural design uses state-of-the-art engineering data, technology, and standards for wood products to ensure that buildings are safe and have substantial fire resistance. VICA urged the City Council to not limit construction and to consider the costs and impacts that this motion would have on housing throughout Los Angeles. However, to our disappointment, this policy was passed.

Advocating for a Diverse Energy Portfolio
VICA's advocacy came in a variety of forms this week, as VICA spoke out against the closure of the Playa del Rey natural gas storage facility through public comment and submitting letters to Los Angeles City Councilmembers. In the San Fernando Valley and throughout the City, we have seen blackouts in the past year that have had devastating impacts on Angelenos. All energy sources, including the natural gas supplied by the Playa del Rey natural gas facility, are needed to meet the energy demands of households and businesses, especially as we head into the hot summer months. Despite this, the City Council voted on Wednesday to pass the resolution to support the closure of the natural gas facility at Playa del Rey. This is a disappointing result for VICA, as we understand the importance of having access to a diverse portfolio of consistent, affordable, and reliable energy sources.
