The Road Not Taken:

Where Might Reflection and Introspection Lead You?

It’s been a long fall. Somehow, it always feels like that to me and the final sprint to the end of the term, end of grading and graduation always seems a bit more hectic than intended…again. All the same, it’s a great time to reflect on what we really HAVE accomplished, what we can cross off the to-do list [whether it was done or didn’t really need to be there in the first place], and just to pause and breathe. January will be here soon enough so, of course, it quickly becomes a time to think about what we will do to foster our own development and well-being in the year to come. One thing about being a member of the MSU community and its surroundings is... (Read Marilyn's full message)

Invest in Yourself: Cohort Program Applications Due March 7, 2024

We have talked often about considering one’s career as a book with many chapters. If you are thinking ahead to what comes next in your own professional development – that next chapter you want to write - we invite you to watch for several Thrive sessions scheduled in February to help navigate promotion and annual evaluation processes and to consider applying for one of the 2024 cohort programs offered by the Office of Faculty and Academic Staff Development. Past participants from each program share a brief reflection of what they gained from participation in the program and investing in their own professional development. Read how the cohort programs made a difference for past participants

Opportunity to Advance a University Culture that Values Teaching

The transition to the Student Perceptions of Learning Survey (SPLS) began with a review of the two-page SIRS policy that had not been revised since 1979. With input from across the university in a broadly inclusive process, the nine-page Student Perceptions of Learning Environments Policy was adopted by university governance and the office of the provost. The name was changed from SIRS to SPLS to acknowledge that these end-of-course surveys represent student perceptions or experiences in a course. Important to the culture shift currently underway is... Learn what led to the new SPLS

New Faculty and Academic Staff Orientation

The January 2024 New Faculty and Academic Staff Orientation will be held in an “asynchronous” format only. All new academics can access Desire to Learn (D2L) modules that provide essential information, including resources from various campus offices and important policies and procedures. An invitation will be sent to new faculty and academic staff from the provost in December. Individuals hired after August 22, 2023, or those who were unable to attend the August 2023 orientation will be invited to participate in this asynchronous format. Invitations will be emailed. Learn more about this orientation.

Faculty Success Program Offered by NCFDD

Each year, the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) hosts several iterations of the Faculty Success Program, a twelve-week online program to support faculty with the goals of increasing research and writing productivity, gaining control of their time, and balancing personal and professional responsibilities. The Faculty Success Program is NCFDD’s most robust and practical support for faculty, with programs intentionally designed to connect faculty from underrepresented groups to a broader community of scholars. The program components include weekly training modules, small group calls, private coaching, and an online community of peers. Learn more about NCFDD opportunities
