This month’s PepTalk features a bit of practical knowledge - my tips on taking better photos for showing your work on your website or social media.
What prompted me to add this art marketing subject to my PepTalk? I saw how badly a presentation could be, for a variety of reasons: camera shakes, bad lighting, panorama shots of your studio or a roller-coaster studio tour.
Here are my photo tips for taking good images of your artwork:
•Photo just the artwork - no clutter or propped up on an easel
•No frame - photo only the work
•Signed and varnished
•Simple black cotton velvet wall
•Two photo floods or studio lights
Now, let’s talk about the how and why of taking photos of YOU:
•Candid photos of you working in your studio - your customers are curious about you and where you work
•Photo you with a piece of your art - shows scale
•Photo you with award-winning art! Make sure you include that blue ribbon!
•You do not need to point to your art (we all see it…) or be over-animated
•Make sure you are lighted very well!
