Church News

In Memoriam

Helen Schold

Dear friends in Christ,

We hold in prayer our sister in Christ, Helen Schold who died on September 20th at the age of 103. She became a member at St. Barnabas in 2001. A funeral service will take place in Brookings, SD and a celebration of Helen's life will be scheduled for a later date in Minneapolis, MN.

Isaiah 41 tells us to "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." The Good News of God is that we are not alone in times of trouble. During this time of grief, we place our hope and trust in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection of Christ, and ask you to keep this family in your loving prayers.

New Member “Discovery Class”

this Sunday Between Services

Are you interested in learning more about St. Barnabas and membership? We will offer discovery class times and provide packets of information and discussion on our vision, goals, and theology. All are welcome to attend, and attending does not mean you are expected to join. But, for those who choose to take the next step of membership, we will receive new members on Sunday, October 22 at both services. Please speak to a pastor if you are interested in more information about the class.

Fall 6-Week Small Group Study on “Civic Life and Faith” October 8-November 14

Our Fall Small Group Study begins this Sunday. We will have multiple days and times available for sign up. If you’ve never joined a group in the past, make this year the year to start. Our topic this Fall will be the ELCA “Civic Life and Faith” study which uses DVD and discussion sheets to discern what it means to be a faithful Christian in our world today, and in light of complex issues. Sign-up sheets are located in the Welcome Center.

Missions, Inc. Visitor:

Our October Gift of Love is collected for Missions, Inc., a local non-profit that provides chemical health, domestic violence, and long-term care services. Kaylie Burns Gahagan, Director of Development and Communications, will be with us in worship on October 15th, and will present a forum in the Alcove between services.

Other News & Church Activities

Our former intern, Lydia Svenulski, will be ordained as pastor on Saturday, October 14 at 10:30am. The ordination is held at Christus Victor Lutheran Church (7510 Palomino Drive, Apple Valley). She has been called as pastor to Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Hopkins. All are invited to attend.

Save the Date ~ October 29th

TRUNK-OR-TREAT

October is Spooky Month! Help make spooky fun safe by participating in Trunk-or-Treat on Sunday, October 29th, from 3-5pm. Little ghosts and ghouls will trick-or-treat from trunk to trunk and can enjoy refreshments and games. We need some fun and kid-loving folks to decorate their car trunks and provide treats for the trunk-or-treaters. There’s a sign-up sheet in the narthex for those who would like to enter their vehicle. We are also asking for candy donations which will be passed out that day. Drop off candy in the church office by Friday, October 27th.

“JUST for Fun” Festival ~ October 1st

What a wonderful day at Just for Fun! Our family had such a great time - the food, music, fellowship and the weather were terrific. It was a one-stop shop for picking up some big & little pumpkins. We thank ALL of you who were part of the planning committee and volunteers to make it a special day for St. Barnabas as well as supporting our community with donations to IOCP.

Volunteer Opportunities

Ministry Teams Volunteers

Are you looking for a place to plug-in at St. Barnabas? Would you like to serve in worship? We are always looking to add volunteers to all of our ministry teams, but we are especially looking to fill two new roles we’ve created:

Acolytes light the candles during the prelude and extinguish them during the postlude. They also hand the offering plates to ushers and collect them after the offering, and help if needed during communion.

Sound Technicians turn on the sound system, ensure that worship leaders have microphones and batteries are fresh, and adjust volume levels during worship, if necessary. It’s not nearly as technical as the name would lead you to believe!

Talk to Pastor Stephanie with questions or to volunteer!
