PRIORITY TO ACTION: DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS WELLNESS
Last week division staff received an email from the Senior Leadership Team regarding new wellness initiatives.

  1. Division of Student Affairs Wellness Breaks. Staff are encouraged to intentionally set aside 30 minutes once per month to engage in activities to support their wellness and wellbeing. Ideas and resources can be found here.
  2. Guidance for supervisor/employee conversations around wellness. Staff should incorporate these questions and thoughts into regular meetings to improve and strengthen the division's commitment to wellness.

These resources will be available via this monthly newsletter. The Division of Student Affairs Staff Development and Wellbeing committee encourages division staff to submit ideas and sustainable strategies we can use to continue progress in shifting the culture towards wellbeing in the division.

Thanks to the Division of Student Affairs Staff Development and Wellness committee for their continued commitment to prioritize wellness within the division and offering strategic initiatives for staff.
LIVING THROUGH AND EMERGING FROM A PANDMEMIC
April 1 at 2 p.m.
Join Student Counseling Services staff and Division of Student Affairs Staff Development and Wellbeing committee in an interactive session focused on navigating grief/loss and how we can foster and live into our values as individuals and as a division. The session will open with an acknowledgment of our experiences from a challenging year, discussion on collective grief, and exploring our hierarchy of needs.

Following the opening, staff will choose between one of three virtual breakout rooms for some facilitated discussion and an activity. The three breakout rooms will focus on 1) Grieving during a pandemic: The six needs of mourning and how to attend to our grief, 2) Mindfulness and Living into our values during a pandemic, and 3) Wellbeing Action Planning. These action oriented sessions will provide some tangible strategies and next steps as we continue to live through and emerge from the pandemic.

We look forward to having you join us for this session.

McKinley Paratore, Graduate Assistant, Student Activities Center
Their nominator said:
McKinley Paratore is a graduate student in the Higher Education, Student Affairs Program and her assistantship is with the Student Activities Center. McKinley is committed to the success of the Student Activities Center and to holding the staff accountable for commitments to racial justice and equity. I am impressed with her ability, her thoughtfulness, and her responsibility to put theory into practice by directly sharing classroom skills, theories, and discussions with her colleagues at the SAC, and fostering skills to directly apply them to her assistantship. McKinley has accomplished so much this year by being the primary coordinator for the Iowa State Leadership Experience, pivoting programs into successful online formats, and guiding student organizations through near constant COVID-19 changes. McKinley is responsive and engaged with her work at the SAC. She steps into roles and conversations when asked or when necessary. She provides extensive research, theory, and practice on how to make improvements to SAC events, policies, and procedures with regards to racial and social justice and gender equity. I want to acknowledge how difficult these conversations are to approach as a graduate student and acknowledge how impressed I am with McKinley for taking them on. How she encourages critical self-reflection, staff development, and how she goes above and beyond as a graduate student staff member. The SAC is extremely lucky to have McKinley as a student staff member because she CAREs.
