Reflection from your Co-Pastors
June 28, 2022
Matthew 8: 25
“Jesus, save us! We are lost!”
This was the cry of the disciples as a violent storm swamped their boat with water. Jesus’ disciples today are crying out with the same refrain: “Jesus, save us! We are lost!” The world as we have known it has drastically changed in the past few years and our comfort zone, our smooth sailing, has been disrupted. We continue to try to make sense of it all, or at best, adjust to our lives as they are in a toxic environment (both COVID virus and air quality), political unrest, threats of war, and fear for the foundations of our democracy. “Jesus save us! We are lost!”
Yet, as the disciples stayed together supporting each other through the storms of the sea and of their lives, especially after Jesus crucifixion, death, and resurrection, we too have each other for comfort, support and strength through this time of unknowing-- this in between time from “How can this be?” to “Nothing is impossible with God.” Let us stand together in support of each other at Mary of Magdala, and let our prayer be “God, lead us in your justice.” Amen
Today, I'd like to share with you the words of poet, novelist, and social justice activist, Marge Piercy:

THE LOW ROAD *
What can they do
to you? Whatever they want.
They can set you up, they can
bust you, they can break
your laws, they can
burn your brain with electricity,
blur you with drugs till you
can't walk, can't remember, they can
take your child, wall up
your lover. They can do anything
you can't stop them
from doing. How can you stop
them? Alone, you can fight,
you can refuse,
but they roll over you.
But two people can keep each other sane,
can give support, conviction, love, massage, hope.
Three people are a delegation,
a committee, a wedge. With four
you can play bridge and start
an organization. With six
you can rent a whole house,
eat pie for dinner with no
seconds, and hold a fund-raising party.
| | |
A dozen make a demonstration.
A hundred fill a hall.
A thousand have solidarity and your own newsletter;
ten thousand, power and your own paper;
a hundred thousand, your own media;
ten million, your own country.
It goes on one at a time,
it starts when you care
to act, it starts when you do
it again after they said no,
it starts when you say We
and know who you mean,
and each day you mean one more.
