Paul Roberts to Preach
"Always Reforming"
President of Johnson C. Smith Seminary
This Sunday we are honored to have with us Paul Roberts, President of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary, who will be our guest preacher at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.

To help us kick off our observances of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Paul Roberts will deliver an inaugural sermon in our "Always Reforming" sermon series.

Then, following the 11:00 a.m. service, he will host an open forum in Borwell Dining Room, in which he will explore topics related to the future of Johnson C. Smith Seminary and the Presbyterian Church (USA) in this new century of Protestant Christianity.

Johnson C. Smith Seminary is one of the ten theological schools of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the only one that is historically African American. Paul Roberts has been president of that seminary, located in Atlanta, since the spring of 2010.

He graduated from Princeton University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture and African American studies and worked for eight years in advertising in New York City. He later received a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in New Testament studies from Johnson C. Smith at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.

He is also an Academic Fellow of the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey in Celigny, Switzerland.

Please join us in welcoming Paul Roberts to Fourth Church!

Marking the Reformation's 500th Anniversary
To mark this year's 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, we are launching an "Always Reforming" sermon series this Sunday.

Together we'll be exploring what it means to be part of the Reformed tradition--and to be committed to be "always reforming." Along the way we'll use a variety of statements of faith from our Book of Confessions and, in our sermons, look at various topics within our tradition:

Sept 24 : Sovereignty of God
Oct 1: "Priests without Robes (or Tabs)"
Oct 8: "Depraved and Confused"
Oct 15: "Total Grace"
Oct 22: "Gratitude and Responsibility"
Oct 28: "Always Being Reformed"
Nov 5: "Commitment to the City"

The Academy for Faith and Life will also be offering a series of adult education classes on topics related to the Reformation, our Reformed tradition, and what it looks like to be always reforming. Information about the classes, the first of which begins on Sunday, October 1, can be found at www.fourthchurch.org/academy
four"Pathways to Serving"
A Women at Fourth Gathering
All women are invited to a time of fellowship hosted by Women at Fourth this Thursday, September 28, followed by a program on "Different Pathways to Serving Others."

Stacy Jackson, Director of Chicago Lights, and Jackie Lorens Harris, Director of the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center, will present an engaging and interactive discussion about the mission of their  programs, programmatic accomplishments, and volunteer opportunities.

Those attending are asked to bring a donation of individually prepackaged snack items to help Fourth Church and Chicago Lights reach their goal of collecting 10,000 snack items by October 1. That figure represents a two-month supply of single servings of granola bars, chips, pretzels, and fruit cups for Fourth Church Meals Ministry bag lunches and the Social Service Center emergency snack packs.
