Welcome to all

The Normandy Camporee – organized by the Transatlantic Council (TAC) has evolved into a key cornerstone of recognition and remembrance of the historic global event of 6 June 1944.

The Apri 8-10, 2022 event will be the 11th Normandy Camporee organized by TAC – which now has been recognized by the Republic of France as “Custodians of Omaha Beach”

We welcome all those interested in supporting, volunteering or are already signed up for staff, to help us prepare and deliver this unparalled program. We want to ensure that our Camporee cascades through the 100th anniversary of the D-Day landing and beyond – such that future Scouts and Scouters can participate in and benefit from this transformational event.

The 2022 Camporee will be a different one from the years before! The most noticeable difference is, that we will have to do this one without Vince Cozzone. He retired as Scout Executive in 2018, and as you may know he was a crucial component to the succes of Normandy Camporees in the past. Before we start preparing for this one, we can already conclude that we will miss his personal signature. Mistakes will be made but new solutions will be found!

What will be the same as the years before is our intention to do our best for all parties participating in this event. Our goal is to make the visit to Normandy and the landing beaches a memorable and life lasting experience for Scouts and Scouters from all over the world. Our goal is also to make this the best Normandy Camporee and that will also be our motto for all the Normandy camporees to follow. We hope to welcome Scouts and Scouters from many different countries, especially the continental US. We hope to monetize the event to ensure its durability and sustainability.

Staff Organization Plan

The staff organization for the Normandy Camporee 2022 will be different. In the past, the council professional and administrative staff lead the way. This time our volunteer lead efforts will be chaired by no less than Dick Meijaard. Dick has served on the staff of many Normandy Camporees, in addition to serving in unit roles, and part of the Charlemagne District Key 3.

Council Vice President for Program, Rick Hathaway, announced an Executive Committee structure for the event. Members will include:

  • Normandy Executive Committee Chair: - Dick Meijaard
  • TAC President – Dean Menegas
  • TAC CEO – Tom Jansen
  • Council Treasurer: Shawn Frost
  • Vice President for Program: Rick Hathaway
  • Vice President for Development: Scott Eversman
  • Vice President for Communications: Michael Walton
  • Vice President for Sustainability: Matthew May

The Normandy Executive Committee will also have representation from each of the Normandy Camporee Operating Committee Chairs:

  • Recruitment – TAC participants and other councils
  • Unit Communication
  • Unit Camping Logistics
  • Scout Leadership
  • Media Relations
  • Government Coordination
  • Pre-Event Activities
  • Messengers of Peace (MOP) Dinner
  • Campfire Program
  • Sunday Service at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial
  • Administration/Registration
  • Trading Post

We are looking for individuals to serve on each of these committees. Not only to chair the committees but also to help out to do what each committee has been tasked to complete.

Target Date and Program

The target date for the event is April 8-10 (pending confirmation from local French officials)

We look forward to thousands of participants invading our campsites, participating in ceremonies and the other organized program activities, pending time on their own commemorating those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

With the number of participants we anticipate, as a staff, we need to prepare in a most professional way. This event goes way beyond a standard District or Council event, We have a worldwide stage, where we will perfrom and offer an unparalleled program to a global audience.
