Healthcare Facilities Network

January 2024 Programming

January updates

An article posted this month in Becker's Hospital Review piqued our interest. In it, Northwell Health President Michael Dowling discusses the healthcare employee shortage and a new healthcare-centric high school that will be built with Northwell's support.

In the article, Dowling says, "There's only a workforce shortage if you don't do anything today."

Mr. Dowling, the Healthcare Facilities Network has reached out to you. If you read this, please don't hesitate to contact us. That quote encapsulates why we created this Network. Let's work together on our common goal.

One person whom we spoke with in January was ASHE President Skanda Skandaverl. Skanda paints a clear picture of his goals and priorities for the year. The link to episode 1 is found below.

Thanks for watching, and please subscribe to the Network if you still need to do so.

Change management FM style: Lessons with Bill Belichick

Change is part of everyday life. How we handle change is critical to our careers and happiness. In this episode, we focus on change management, using audio from a radio interview with Bill Belichick, former head coach of the New England Patriots, conducted in 2016.

In the audio, Belichick is asked how he talks to millennials who play for the Patriots. While answering the question, he discusses his approach to moving the team's playbook to the iPad. Non-football and football fans will find his comments instructive in dealing with change. They remain as timely today as they were then, if not more so, due to a multi-generational healthcare facility management workforce.

The Mastermind Series: Compliance, Ep 1

The Healthcare Facilities Network debuts its Mastermind Series with a look at Compliance. As more people with no healthcare facilities management experience take roles in healthcare engineering, one of the most significant risks they bring, if not the biggest, is their learning curve in Compliance and regulatory management.

In this two-episode series, our guests Taylor Vaughn from Children's Health Dallas and Jack Evans from The Joint Commission cover much ground. Episode 1 takes a big-picture look at the survey process, while Episode 2 discusses the pre-work needed before survey day.

January Highlights

Conversation with ASHE President Skanda Skandaverl, Ep 1

In January, we welcomed Skanda Skandaverl, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) president, to the Network.

Skanda's day job is as the Division Director of Facilities Management, Energy, and Infrastructure, Midwest, at CommonSpirit Health. Skanda's home base is Omaha, NE, and he is accountable for more than 30 hospitals in 4 states.

Over our two episodes, we discuss Skanda's interesting career path, his entry into healthcare, his goals as ASHE President, his belief that collaboration, not competition, is the future, and the challenges facing healthcare engineering.

Career Ladders, ep. 3

It is one of our favorite episodes to record. So, The Healthcare Facilities Network returns with a look at career paths in healthcare facilities management and hospital engineering.

In this episode, we review engineering career paths and look at some of the resumes of candidates who have expressed interest in working in Critical Access Hospitals.

FM Survey 2023

While it was last year, we wanted to close the loop on our 2023 FM survey because the results were released just before Christmas. The link below will take you to a video disclosing those results. Thanks to all who participated.

Use silence strategically during interviews.

Skilled interviewers know how to use silence to effectively extract more information from candidates. Candidates must be comfortable with silence, but to use silence effectively, they must first do this, which we explain in this brief excerpt.
