Hello friends!
Poe Paddy was a 'tunnel' of fun!
Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Poe Paddy Tunnel last Wednesday and Sunday. We had a great time exploring the Mid-State Trail with Jim Flanagan and Penns Valley Conservation Association, and fly fishing with Penns Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited. If you didn't make it this week, you can still explore this gorgeous destination all throughout the year.
Celebrate Juneteenth and Father's Day with us this Sunday!
Sunday, June 19 is Juneteenth, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. The date marks a historic day in 1865, two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, when troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the proclamation that legally freed enslaved people. While the Juneteenth holiday has been celebrated every year since 1865, it was declared an official federal holiday in 2020.
Bellefonte is home to a great deal of history related to the emancipation of enslaved people and the Underground Railroad. This Sunday, between 1 and 4 p.m., visit the Centred Outdoors welcome table at Talleyrand Park for directions for a self-guided walking tour of this history which was recently created by several local organizations. Visit six locations within walking distance of the park at your own pace to learn about how people and places assisted and sheltered enslaved people seeking freedom. Tour information will be available on Sunday and can also be accessed here.
Make Dad's day with croquet!
Before or after the tour, come to the far end of Talleyrand Park (by Big Spring Spirits) anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. to play and learn about croquet with the Talleyrand Croquet Group. All equipment will be provided and all ages and skill levels are welcome to play in a casual and fun atmosphere.
Take a tour with Local Historia on Wednesday!
On Wednesday, June 22 at 6 p.m., we'll take a guided walking tour with Local Historia to learn about the interesting history in and around Talleyrand Park. From the Big Spring to the Gamble Mill, the tour includes discussion of industries like the Match Factory, railroads, former structures, the development of Talleyrand Park as well as other stories about Bellefonte and its people.
Thanks, we look forward to seeing you soon!
