ASK THE COUNTY
State of the County Address

We will be providing answers to the questions that didn't get answered at the State of the County Address due to time constraints. Look for our weekly newsletter feature and take a moment to ASK THE COUNTY a question and we will answer it here in our weekly column.

How does BoCo Govt. plan to support small business going forward in 2021?
Answer provided by Ken McFadyen, Director of Economic Development for Botetourt County

  1. Maintain partnership and funding of the Advancement Foundation's "Gauntlet" small business plan competition.
  2. Reprint and redistribute the "Botetourt's Open for Business" small business development brochure; every licensed small business should have received the brochure in 2020; the brochure includes valuable information about how to prepare a business plan and contacts of local and regional business planning resources.
  3. Continue to promote the assistance available to small businesses through the Roanoke Regional Small Business Development Center (SBDC), SCORE, Advancement Foundation, Virginia Community Capital, Botetourt Chamber, and others.
  4. Should additional CARES or federal assistance become available to Botetourt County in 2021, we should look to announce another round of grants and make improvements to the program that was created and carried out in 2020.
  5. Continue to tell the story of Botetourt County small businesses, similar to the "Open for Business" video the County produced in 2019 https://youtu.be/UqSHoZoC01Y.

Visit the Parks & Recreation Facebook page to stay updated on the County sports' programs.

Celebrate Black History Month | Finding What Has Been Lost, The African American Story in Botetourt County

“Finding What Has Been Lost” is a display that celebrates the story of the African American communities of Botetourt County. The exhibit highlights the communities, churches, schools, community groups and individual stories that showcase these communities scattered throughout Botetourt County.

Thanks to the many years of research and collecting photos and artifacts by Edward Barnett and his sister Judith Barnett, this exhibit has become an important way to document the history of the African American community in the county. Display boards, featuring facts and photos will be set up in the Botetourt Gallery on the first floor of the museum.
2nd Lt. George Kydd III was a Tuskegee Botetourt pilot in the Army Air force. Tuskegee Airmen were primarily African-American military pilots (fighter and bomber) and airmen who fought in WWII. His picture was shared by his son, Richard Kydd.
Submission period open from February 15 to March 15.

Governor Ralph Northam today invited Virginia students, educators, and families to participate in the second annual Black History Month Historical Marker Contest.
This initiative offers opportunities to learn about African Americans who have made important contributions to Virginia history, provides teachers with resources to guide history discussions, and includes a contest where students can submit ideas for new historical markers to the Department of Historical Resources. More information on how to compete is here.
