PAVING AND ROAD WORK UPDATE FOR 2022

Happy Lunar New Year!
As our community celebrates the Year of the Tiger, I would like to reaffirm my commitment to you, the residents of District 4. This time of celebration calls on us to be brave in the face of adversity and to be bold with both our words and our actions. It is a time to focus on our strengths as a community and face our challenges together with resolve and persistence.
|
|
For those of you who will be celebrating out and about this year, I'd like to offer some tips from our friends at the San Jose Police Department to help ensure we keep our community safe.
Street Precautions
- Always be alert to your surroundings and the people around you.
- Don’t walk near bushes or parked cars.
- Walk in well-lit areas and ask for an escort or a friend to join you.
- Know your route and where to go for help if needed.
- Tell family members and friends where you are going and when you are expected to return.
- Do not carry a lot of cash with you and leave unnecessary credit cards at home.
- Keep money in a pocket instead of a purse or wallet.
- Keep purses in front and close to you.
- Make eye contact with people you pass.
If Taking Public Transportation
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Use busier stops, preferably near open businesses.
- After boarding, sit as close to the operator as possible.
- After leaving, make sure no one follows you.
If You Encounter a Situation
- Safety First: Trust your instincts and assess your surroundings.
- If you feel unsafe, and you are able to, leave the area. If you are unable to leave call 911 or 408-277-8911.
- Stay Calm: Take a deep breath, limit eye-contact, maintain neutral body language.
- Speak Out (If you can do so safely): In a calm and firm voice establish physical boundaries and denounce their behavior and comments.
- Seek Immediate Support: Ask bystanders for support or intervention/call 911.
- Seek Emotional Support: Once you feel safe, take time to recover and reach out to someone to talk about what happened. Remember this is not your fault, and you are not alone.
I wish all of you a happy, healthy, and safe Year of the Tiger!
Sincerely,

- GUN HARM ORDINANCE
- MORRILL MIDDLE SCHOOL VACCINATION EVENT 1/29
- OPEN ENROLLEMENT FOR COVERED CALIFORNIA
|
|
On Tuesday, my Council Colleagues and I passed a Gun Harm Ordinance that was the first of its kind in the country. Our goal is to encourage gun safety and to reduce the incredible financial burden of gun violence currently being shouldered by our community.
|
|
Gun related injury and death is a public health crisis in our country. As you can see from the graphic above, gun policy and mass shootings usually grab headlines but the majority of harm caused by guns goes largely unreported. Many of these deaths, suicides, and accidental shootings are preventable if gun owners take the necessary precautions.
That is what our Gun Harm Ordinance is meant to encourage. By making gun owners more aware and more accountable to the potential harm guns pose, we hope gun owners will take the needed steps to ensure their firearms are stored safely and handled properly. I understand that stemming the tide of gun violence is a complex problem that requires an equally complex set of solutions. This ordinance addresses some of the causes that make up nearly 2/3 of all gun violence.

YEAR IN REVIEW AND COMMUNITY SURVEY
|
|
As we begin developing our plan for 2022, my staff and I have been hard at work reviewing the progress we've made in 2021 as well as identifying areas where both we and the City can continue to improve.
There are many things in the works for my office including a new website, more townhalls and office hours, community events, and more. Stay tuned. I'll provide updates as we continue to build on the work we've done. We've prepared a brief video recap of our first year in office, which you can view by clicking the thumbnail below.
|
|
My team and I strive to provide excellent service to our constituents. We encourage District 4 residents to contact our office with questions and concerns so we can proactively seek to resolve issues within the City of San Jose’s purview. I invite you to share your feedback through this Community Survey. Let me know what areas within the city’s scope need our attention. We appreciate your input and look forward to always providing you with first-rate service.
Sincerely,
