Provider Spotlight
This month features two Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) who are innovating in their field by utilizing telehealth.

Chelsea Paulus exemplifies Wyoming’s entrepreneurial spirit as she filled a gap in services by creating her own small business call Connect Speech Therapy. Karen Richard wanted to offer her SLP services in Laramie, but there were no job openings, so she took her talents to telehealth and was able to stay in the community she loved while doing what she loved.
What is your proudest accomplishment with telehealth?

Chelsea: I am most proud of bringing awareness of telehealth to so many people- teachers, kids, parents, school administrators, pediatricians, ENTs, dentists, and other allied health professionals. When schools started to close in 2020, due to the covid-19 pandemic, many people reached out to me for advice. I am very proud that they felt I could help them take care of their students and patients when they couldn’t physically be together.

Karen: Working with the Wyoming Speech-Language-Hearing Association (WyoSHA), the Wyoming SLP-Audiology licensing board, and Senator Pappas in advocating for telepractice guidance within our state licensing regulations and joining the The Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Because of that work, we now have a chapter in our licensing rules outlining safe telepractice evaluation and treatment. Thanks to our legislatures, Wyoming was one of the first states to join the ASLP-IC, which will allow for communication practitioners to apply for a single license across participating states. ASLP-IC’s goal is to increase accessibility for practitioners and clients, create speeder processes to serve clients in their home states, improve portability for military spouses, and improve continuity of care.

Telehealth Mini-Grants Available for Families
Mini-grants are now available to help Wyoming families offset the costs of technology for their children's telehealth medical appointments.

Telehealth is the use of technology to provide healthcare at a distance. This usually takes the form of video visits, but it can also include remote patient monitoring or phone calls. Telehealth visits are similar in many ways to in-person appointments.

Criteria for Wyoming families to participate:
● Participate in 2 online training sessions (via Zoom)
● Demonstrated need (child w/ special health care needs, upcoming therapy sessions and/or medical appointments that could be completed via Telehealth)

Center for Connected Health Policy Billing Guide

The Center for Connected Health Policy (CCHP) is providing an informational billing guide to assist those who have questions regarding telehealth billing. The guide is primarily about Medicare fee-for-service billing as policies vary from state-to-state for Medicaid and commercial payers.

The purpose of the guide is to clarify:
  • Telehealth billing and how to get reimbursed
  • Current legislation dictating billing requirements
  • Requirements applicable during calendar year 2021
  • The requirements relevant only during the periods of Public Health Emergency (PHE) extensions
  • What may occur post-PHE

School-Based Health Mini-Series
UW ECHO in Student Health and the Wyoming Telehealth Network have partnered to create a School-Based Health mini-series. This mini-series will provide a foundation in understanding how telehealth and school-based health centers can be used to support school nurses and increase student access to health. We will examine approaches from a local, regional, and national level.
