An academic bilingual community fostering global citizenship
From the Principal
April 29, 2021

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

It has been great to see students working and playing outside this week! I have seen our children engaged in some amazing four square competitions, nature walks, math outside, and time to draw!

At school this week, our third, fourth and fifth graders have been taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA's). This morning, they started the math MCA's. Our students have done a nice job taking their time to demonstrate their learning related to our state standards. Our staff and K-2 students have done a nice job keeping the building quiet to help support our 3-5 community.

We are continuing our planning for the end of the year events, which seems surreal! As has been our tradition, we will end the year with singing and dancing our students to the cars and buses at dismissal time on the last day of school. DLA students are invited to participate. We will have some fun activities planned for the grade levels on the last day of school. Our annual fifth grade Celebration of Learning will occur on Wednesday, June 9th at 12:45. This event will occur in classrooms and on-line, and fifth grade families will be sent the link to be able to participate. We will also record it and send it out after the event. Starting a new tradition, fifth grade families will also be invited to a "reverse car parade" at school that afternoon to wave goodbye to the staff members who have worked with them on their elementary school journey. More information will follow about these events.

Thanks for all you do to support your children and our children and for being a member of our community.

Most sincerely,

Corey

COVID-19 vs. Allergies: Do I Need to Quarantine?
Information Regarding Allergy/Cold/Flu Season

Some symptoms of general illness such as seasonal allergies, colds, and/or flu overlap with symptoms of COVID-19. If a parent/guardian/family member believes their child/student has any illness - which displays the same symptoms as COVID-19 - the student, and other household members, are not allowed to attend school until:

  • The symptomatic student tests negative for COVID-19; or
  • An alternative diagnosis (such as allergies, cold, or flu) is received from the child’s/student’s health care provider in written form and copied to the school health office.

If the student with symptoms does not test for COVID-19, or receive an alternative diagnosis from their health care provider, they would need to isolate at home for 10 days and household members would follow the 14 day quarantine protocol.

Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA)
Grades 3 - 5
From MDE (Minnesota Department of Education): Testing is used in schools to measure student achievement. State tests are given to students in a district once a year, based on their grade level and subject area. Classroom tests are given by individual teachers on a more regular basis and may include quizzes, mid-terms, chapter tests, and final exams, among others. Both types of tests give educators an idea of how well their students are learning the concepts presented to them in the classroom.

Grades 3-5 READING: April 26 & 27 from 8-10:30 am
Grades 3-5 MATH: April 29 & 30 from 8-10:30 am

Grade 5 SCIENCE: May 4 from 8-10:30 am

Educators can use this testing information to adjust their instruction to increase how well their students retain what is being taught.

Grade 5 Families - Middle School Site Council 2021-2022
Hello 5th grade families and a big welcome to the Middle School next year!

We hope you will get involved during your child's 3 short years at the Middle School. One way to do that is participating in Site Council or various open volunteer leads.

Site Council is a group of parents/staff/administration that meets 7 times a year to discuss pertinent issues and self select to work on a strategic focus area committee. Committee break-outs this year included 1) Racial Equity, 2) Mental Health, 3) Communication, 4) Student Recognition. We anticipate continuing work on many of these areas in the 2021/22 school year. Meetings are approximately once per month on Wednesday's and were held virtually this year. No meetings December or March due to Winter/Spring Breaks.

  • Site Council and Leadership open positions for 21/22 school year:
  • Site Council Co-Chair - Co-lead with Julie Yakes - collaborate with administration as we build and lead meaningful content for meetings, ensure volunteer leads have support, build structure, etc. Approx time commit = 4-5 hours/month.
  • Treasurer - Be in charge of finances, building and executing budget, writing checks, etc. Approx time commitment = 1-3 hours/month
  • Fundraising Co-Lead - Help lead and execute the annual direct donation campaign; Approx time commitment July - September = 5-15 hours/month; Approx time commitment Oct - June = 0 hours/month
  • Site Council members at large - Participate in Site Council meetings and strategic focus area committee work; Approximate time commitment: 1.5 hours/month Sept - May; All parents are welcome. We ask that you commit to attending at least 5 of the 7 meetings to maximize the committee work.

Unsure or have questions? Please contact Julie Yakes (612-210-5196) or Heidi Meyer (612-462-5364) for more information.

Together, we can continue to make the Middle School even better! Welcome!
