During the 9:30 and 11:00 services, the Sunday School students will help lead us in worship, as they frequently do on the second Sunday of the month through their participation in the roles of beadle and lay liturgist.

Also, for the first part of the services, all children who otherwise take part in Sunday School will instead stay with their parents as they attend worship. The children will then depart for their classrooms, with their teachers, before the sermon begins.

We will also take this opportunity to commission during the 9:30 and 11:00 services the Sunday School teachers, who are a faithful presence in the lives of our children. They are but one way that we live out our congregational promise, made during the baptismal liturgy, to nurture in the Christian life the children being baptized.

Our churchwide composting program is underway!

During Coffee Hour look for “Green Apron” volunteers, who are helping oversee a “station” where compostable items will be collected in green bins. These items include food scraps, plates and utensils, cups, napkins, wood coffee stir sticks, paper tea and sugar packets, and used tea bags.

(Interested in being a “Green Apron” volunteer? Please contact Robert Crouch to sign up.)

The compost will be carried offsite by an outside vendor and turned into rich soil used to grow nutritious food. By doing that, we are also reducing greenhouse gas emissions by diverting material from landfills.

Together we are committed to living, as the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s environmental stewardship web page emphasizes, “in homage to God by living green and sharing our witness with the world.”
Looking back 50 years to the music and events of 1969 . . .

That is what is on the calendar for next Friday evening, November 15 when the Fourth Church Choral Society presents their autumn concert.

Come listen for the sounds that express the challenges and struggles as well as the celebrations and joys of that year—from the Civil Rights Movement to the Stonewall Riot to Vietnam to the Moon Landing to the Beatles and Abbey Road to that sunny place where the air is sweet: Sesame Street!

Did you see the Halloween-themed treats our baking team made for Monday Night Supper?

Or the trick-or-treat fun shared by Day School students and our Fourth Church and Chicago Lights staff?

How about the playground pumpkin patch for Family Night?

You can view all that and more on Instagram.

Also, if you haven’t yet, we encourage you to take a moment to read the expression of gratitude and powerful testimony made on Facebook by a Fourth Church visitor, lifting up how God’s call to hospitality touches the lives of others.

You can find that as well as sermon quotes and celebrations of our life together—along with invitations to upcoming events—on our page on Facebook.

As you engage with us via these platforms, please know that you are what makes our social media social! Your sharing, liking, commenting, and inviting is what expands our reach and increases our visibility. That in turn is how we together spread the word about what is going on at Fourth Church and Chicago Lights, build community, and extend a warm welcome!

Next week—Friday, November 15—is the deadline to register for our music mission trip to Cuba the week of March 2–9.

This trip, which will be led by John Sherer and Vicky Curtis, offers opportunity to spend a week with our host congregation, the First Presbyterian Church of Havana. You can read more about the trip online, where you will also find a link to the online registration.

Also online is information about our other 2020 trips to Guatemala in July and to Colombia in August.

(Our Guatemalan hosts need a commitment of five trip participants by December 4 in order to begin planning our time with them, so if you are intending to go, we would appreciate your signing up now, in advance of that trip’s January 15 deadline.)
We are in need of volunteers to help with a few projects. Could you help?

  • Book Nook volunteers during Sunday morning Coffee Hours
  • A Food Pantry assistant to help guests of the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center on Tuesdays
  • Share Shop assistants to help guests of the Social Service Center who have come to the shop for clothing
  • Sunday Night Supper servers to help with our weekly Sunday Night Supper for those in our community who are hungry
  • Fair Trade Bazaar volunteers for various shifts, including setup and takedown, between Friday evening, December 6 and Sunday afternoon, December 8
  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day ushers

Sign up or learn more by contacting Robert Crouch, Director of Volunteer Ministry.
We have a wonderful lineup of organ and choral performances—as well as the Bach Marathon’s Brandenburg Concertos—planned for you this month.

On the horizon? A Chanticleer Christmas on December 3 and 4 and a Tower Brass Christmas on December 21—to name just a few of our seasonal concerts!
