Community Remembrance
RCAHD remembers lives lost and says "Thank you" to public health partners

On March 19, the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts will mark two years since the first local case of COVID-19 was identified. Yesterday, RCAHD held a joint community remembrance to thank and recognize the efforts of our public health partners for their work during the pandemic.

The occasion was also an opportunity to honor the memory of more than 930 local residents who lost their lives to COVID-19. The 900 empty chairs placed on the floor of the Berglund Center served as a jarring reminder of the loss to our communities.

Among the organizations honored were the EMS agencies of our localities in Alleghany, Botetourt, Covington, Craig, Roanoke City and County, Salem, the Virginia Dept of Emergency Management, and the Western VA EMS Council; healthcare providers at Bradley Free Clinic, Carilion, HCA Lewis-Gale, New Horizons, and the Salem VA, the Virginia National Guard, the Medical Reserve Corps, and TheraPets of Roanoke Valley.

NEW: VDH COVID-19 Data Dashboard Updates
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) announced last week that changes are being made to its COVID-19 dashboards. The changes are intended to streamline the most helpful information tracking COVID-19 and its impacts on Virginia.

Notable changes will impact the Cases Dashboard:
  • This page now shows cases by report date (previously on the Locality dashboard).
  • Hospitalizations by event date (date of hospital admission) has been removed as a filter.
  • Weekly cases (by date of illness onset) and deaths (by date of death) can now be viewed at the locality, health district, health region, or state level; date range selection has been expanded (past 13 weeks, past 26 weeks, one year, all reporting).

For more detailed information about the changes on each of the VDH dashboards, please view the Website Change Log.

We are pleased that RCAHD COVID-19 trends have remained stable this week. We will continue to monitor the data closely, but we are cautiously optimistic that we continue to move in the right direction as we enter spring.
