In Memoriam - Doreen Fraser
It is with sadness that Field Hockey BC mourns the passing of Beverley Doreen Fraser (nee Armour) last February at the age of 91. Most notably in her field hockey career, Doreen was a member of the 1956 Women’s National Field Hockey Team that was inducted into the Field Hockey Canada Hall of Fame in 2021.

Doreen played field hockey in high school and at UBC under the renowned women’s grass coach May Brown. She was part of the senior UBC Team "Varsity" that won the City League twice in 1949 and 1952 (Spalding Trophy) and the Major Bentham Trophy as the Runner-Up in 1948, 1951, & 1953.

Playing at the highest level, Fraser was rewarded as the recipient of the Watson Trophy in 1953 – an annual award, a rose bowl, for the player who, in addition to being an asset to her team, showed the best sportsmanship in the Greater Vancouver Grass Hockey League.

After graduating from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, she captained the 1954 Canadian Touring Team to California and UBC's hockey grads team called the ‘Alums’. “As UBC students, Barb Hart Harris and I were both on that team that went to California with her; we remember her as very kind and helpful teammate as well as being a very skilled player”, says Charlotte Warren.

In 1956, Doreen was selected to the historic National Women’s Team of that year - the first ever Canadian team to travel to an official international hockey tournament - and played at the Sixth International Federation of Women’s Hockey Association (IFWHA) Triennial Tournament in Australia.

Outside of field hockey, Doreen attended school in West Point Grey where she met her husband, Richard (predeceased), and was a much-loved pharmacist at several drug stores in the area including University Pharmacy and Point Grey Pharmacy. She was also part of the Women's League of Health and Beauty, and an engaged member of the Dunbar Heights United Church and Pacific Spirit United Church.

Doreen passed away peacefully and is survived by her daughter Margot, son Bruce and daughter-in-law Cecilia as well as nephews and a niece. She will be missed.

You may access Doreen’s obituary here.
