Communion and Imposition of Ashes
Shannon Kershner preaching

On Ash Wednesday, we enter into the season of Lent. The Lenten season calls Christians to embrace the faith journey by reflecting upon and deepening their relationship with God and by acting upon their Christian beliefs.

Although often considered a time for giving up something as a way of symbolizing Jesus’ sacrifice and his struggle in the wilderness, the forty days of Lent also offer an opportunity for taking up. During this season, we are invited to thoughtfully take up the gifts of faith—worship, study, prayer, and service—in preparation for Holy Week and Christ’s journey to the cross.

Lenten Devotions
Beginning Wednesday, March 6

A resource for prayer and reflection, the Lenten devotions will be available through five different means beginning on Ash Wednesday.

In print (in the church literature racks)

Ashes on the Way
Wednesday, March 6
7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The imposition of ashes will be available in the Narthex and outside the Sanctuary throughout the day. This is offered for those in our community who are unable to be with us for worship but who find the ashes to be a meaningful way to mark the beginning of this season of repentance and reflection.

Ash Wednesday Worship
Wednesday, March 6
12:10 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

To begin our Lenten journey, we will gather for worship on Ash Wednesday. Shannon Kershner will preach at both services, which will include Communion and the opportunity to receive the imposition of ashes.

Path of Discipleship
Tuesdays, March 12–April 16
6:00–8:30 p.m.

A six-week Lenten series that explores and applies particular spiritual practices that can deepen our faith journey as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Tuesday, March 5 is the last day to register for this six-week Lenten series and space is limited, so be sure to register soon!

This Sunday, March 3 is the last Sunday to contribute a topic or biblical story to our “Big Questions” collection.

If there is something you’ve always hoped would be addressed in a sermon, we are hoping you will share that with us by emailing it to sermons@fourthchurch.org or by writing it on a piece of paper and dropping it in the “Big Questions” box during Coffee Hour.

Then look forward to the ways in which the pastors will use these suggestions to shape their “Big Questions” sermon series in May and June!
If you are doing a weekend grocery-shopping run, please consider putting in your basket some individually packaged snacks for the guests of Fourth Church Meals Ministry!

We are in need of more snack items—particularly chips and fruit cups—in order to fill the bag lunches that are distributed to our hungry neighbors on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in Anderson Hall.

Donations—marked to the attention of “Meals Ministry”—can be dropped off at the church reception desk or shipped directly to the church (Fourth Presbyterian Church, c/o Meals Ministry, 126 E. Chestnut St., Chicago, IL 60611.2014).

Thank you for helping us provide meals to those in need!
For thirty-seven years John Boyle served as a pastor at Fourth Presbyterian Church. During that time his pastoral prayers inspired many to enter into conversation with God.

Now collected in book form, these prayers continue to be a resource for personal and communal prayer and a guide to speaking to God from our hearts.

Copies of Talking to God: Prayers of John H. Boyle can be purchased at the Book Nook during Coffee Hour. They also can be ordered by calling the Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being at 312.787.8425.

All proceeds benefit the Replogle Center, of which John Boyle was the founder.

And if you will be at the Gala of Hope tonight, you can also pick up a copy there!
Fourth Church is a church alive thanks to the time, talent, and treasure of so many. Because of that generosity, we are able to live out our call to be a light in the city in so many life-changing ways. Some of those many examples are highlighted in our 2018 Impact Report.

We hope you will take a moment to view this snapshot of our life together in 2018.

Thank you for all that you make possible by answering the call to give and serve!
“Galatians: New Testament Social Ethics for Today”
Sundays, March 3–24 at 9:30 a.m.
in Room 5E

Paul’s letter to the Galatians calls Christians to express the truth of the gospel in communities where there are ethnic, social, or gender divisions. His message aims to heal ongoing tensions of race, class, and gender by spelling out the social implications of justification by faith.

This Sunday join G. Walter Hansen for the first class in a four-week exploration of how we might both understand the crisis in the church addressed by Paul’s letter and also apply this letter to ethical issues in the church today.

“Conversations with Clergy”
Sunday, March 3 at 5:00 p.m.
in Allison Library

Our monthly “Conversations with Clergy” gathering returns this Sunday afternoon, with Shawn Fiedler, Ministerial Associate for Worship, facilitating our March conversation.

“A Time of Letting Go” will be the topic of this informal discussion, as Shawn shares stories about a significant turning point in his life of faith. As always, for these first-of-the-month conversations, attendees will also be invited to reflect on and contribute their own related stories if they like.

“Discovering Faith at Fourth Church”: An Inquirers’ Class Series
Sundays, March 24–April 7 from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m.
in Room 4F

“Discovering Faith at Fourth Church” is a new opportunity to explore the foundations of Christian faith in the Reformed tradition and be introduced to life at Fourth Church in an informal and interactive setting.

Each week of this three-week series allows for relationship building and focused conversation on essential aspects of our faith and community. We will discuss our individual faith and life journeys. We will dive into theological conversation about confession and grace. We will learn about Fourth Church’s mission and our unique callings within this congregation.

This course is open to visitors, those seeking church membership, and current members who want to refresh their understanding of our faith and their calling. If you are interested in taking part in this series, please register online.
