A Whole Lot of Construction Going On!

Pfauter Building

Holiday time is no time for us to slack off! We've been making great progress on the new buildings.  The Woodland Auto Display expansion is well under way.  The Pfauter "Red Ball Express" building slab was poured and preparations are underway for its construction.

In addition, the Hangar One is getting a new coating of interior insulation, just in time for winter.  Stop by and check out the progress, but please, excuse our dust!

Rich Vogler 1980 Midget Racer
1980 Vogler Craft Midget Racer
This past month, the mother, widow, son, and other family members of the late Rich Vogler visited the Woodland Auto Display as they had heard that one of Rich's Midget race cars, built by Rich and his father, Don Vogler, was restored and on display at the Estrella Warbird Museum/Woodland Auto Display. Rich's mother had traveled from Illinois to visit family members in Newport Beach. The family then made the trip to Paso Robles to see the famous #2 Volkswagon powered race car.

Rich Vogler, aka Mad Dog, was second in wins only to AJ Foyt in the United States Auto Club with 170 plus he amassed numerous Midget and Sprint Car championships. In addition, he won over 200 races in various other racing organizations. Rich was killed in a Sprint Car racing accident in Salem, Indiana 1n 1990 while leading the race on the last lap of the event.
The Crew Travels To Meet the Crowds

Kern County Raceway
1980 Vogler Craf
Pictured left to right, at the Kern County Raceway this past week, is Robert Woodland, Carol and Dan Verstuyft, and Claudia Woodland. The racetrack was advertising their event as George Snider Night. George, a long time friend of the Woodland's, was a many time Indianapolis 500 starter who is from Bakersfield.

There is one of George's former race cars in the collection so the racetrack owners called and asked if we would be willing to bring it over to display. We said we'd be happy to if we could set up a display, banner, hand out promo materials, etc.. A long story short, we left at 9:00 a.m. and arrived back home about 11:00 p.m.. It was a long day but I think very worthwhile as they had us set up by the main entry. Made a lot of Kern Co. people aware of the Estrella Warbirds Museum/Woodland Auto Display as well as catching up with many long time friends, several former drivers known over the years, etc..  If you click on the above picture, it will take you to more information on one of George Snider's former race cars (the one taken to the races that evening!).
The Skybarge is a Winner!

Cal Poly SkyBarge Team
At the October Estrella Warbirds Museum dinner, the guest speakers for the night was an engineering team from CalPoly in San Luis Obispo.  They did a rather unique presentation showing the ability move heavy objects utilizing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) "SkyBarge." The competition included a roster of topflight engineering teams from China, France, India, Peru, Turkey and the U.S.

We were happy to learn that these incredible students took home the prize for 2d place.  Click on the above picture for more information.
